Late Summer Bittersweetness

Well late summer is here, or so we think. When August rolls around it feels that way doesn’t it? Letting go of the carefree days of summer and looking toward the more scheduled way of life.

I enjoy both. I love having the kids home but they thrive on a schedule. It’s always bittersweet. We can relax more in the evenings during summer break but then the weekends become more special through the school year.

I enjoy late summer. It makes me feel nostalgic for some reason. I’m not really sure why. Maybe it’s because it starts a new season. When I was little it was because of my birthday. Yes…I tend to get a little older during late summer.

On a different note…ol’ Fibro just wont quit lately. I have an appointment tomorrow to try to get some relief. Any of you Dirt Roaders deal with this? I am an avid reader so I try to find all of the tools that I can to cope. Can you believe that you can be tired of resting? Well…you can. Scouts honor!

Tonight is a very busy one. Calves going to the sale barn, an open house, and I have laundry galore. (Don’t get down in your get along…or your laundry breeds!) Plus our garden is still going strong…which is wonderful, but busy. Our area is also having camp meeting this week and some of us are going to that. Whew!!!

Whatever you all have going on during these late summer days…I hope that it’s enjoyable. I hope that the love of Jesus breaks through it all and fills your hearts with joy. His love is all sweet, nothing bitter.

You guys still soakin’ up the sun? I have been hearing folks mention fall lately. My mother in law and my husband love fall. My friend does too. I enjoy the cozy seasons so much…but for now I’m enjoying sweet ol’ summertime.

I enjoy the garden in the summer. It’s so fun to have fresh goodies to eat or to put up for winter. I love taking pictures of it too.

I made the kids my usual refrigerator pickles too. They are already enjoying those. Makes my heart happy.

My husband and son have already been to the annual livestock auction at the fair. It’s a favorite of theirs in the summer. This one was a beauty!

Whatever your favorite season…I hope that you guys are enjoying each day of sweet ol’ summertime.

Hello…from the Ozarks. I hope that everyone is well today. Things are coated in green in our neck of the woods. So…although the song says “smoke” pollen does get in your eyes.

I am takin’ it easy today. We cleaned and scrubbed over the weekend, so that is done for a few days. I had a project that I needed to finish for the church, and that is done too. Of course…laundry is chugging. It’s a hobby of mine. 😉

On a side note: It’s yard sale season! All the junkers pump their fists. Above are a few treasures from last week. All the heart eyes for kitchen goodies.

(Crate and Barrel)

Whatever you are up to and wherever you are…I hope that the pollen can be parted and you can get on with life. Wear goggles if you must. We won’t laugh. Much. 😉

Happy Friday Dirt Roaders! I hope that all is well in your neck of the woods. I thought that I would share a bit about the new little life on our hillside farm, today.

Our first time mama, Cleo, had a little one yesterday. So tiny and precious. It’s always so exciting when they calve.

Daddy had to check it out too. I was driving the Gator while our daughter was snapping pictures. It was a beautiful day yesterday and that made it perfect.

In other news…I have been moving things around and rearranging. Now I need to clean this farmhouse from top to bottom. Whew.

I hope that your weekend is bright and cheery…no matter the weather…and I hope that you are blessed with something new…from above.

Have you seen that on Facebook? I believe that it says something like…”It feels like January 74th. Or is it 73rd? Whatever it is…this weather is hormonal. It affects us in lots of ways doesn’t it? I tend to talk about the weather here because it contributes to moods and activity.

This year has kind of went by in a blur so far for us. We found out last fall that our daughter was having some physical problems so we have made several trips to St. Louis. That puts everything else on the back burner and that is definitely okay. We think that they have her on the right track now. We are so thankful for that and for the way that the Lord has directed our steps.

It’s supposed to snow a little, or sleet, and rain, tomorrow. In April. January 74th…you have been a long one.

I have been prepping for summer a bit. A pillow cover made from an old feed sack added a bit of warmth to this January weather. 😉

If it feels like January 74th to you…just hang on. It will be August 87th before you know it.

Lol…that’s a golden oldie. This is how it feels when you go to the grocery store around the first of the month in our town. You feel like you are gonna fall to pieces…or pull your hair out.

It feels like everyone and their neighbor comes out of the hills and hollers for a month’s worth of sustenance. Lands a mercy. And you know what? I always forget…until I pull up there. Good gravy, that’s a packed parking lot!

So, my sweet daughter and I waded the crowd. First we made it down the chute at the front door, like a bunch of deranged cattle with carts. Then we rounded the corner to the goodie aisle. (You ALDI shoppers are catching my drift.) We refrained from spending much there…just picked up a swanky little wok spatula. Anyway…we made it out unscathed and even saw a good friend. It was a profitable trip…but downright crazy.

If you head to the store today…don’t fall to pieces. We need you to remain calm. Insanity is overrated. 😉

Is Old Man Winter getting up in your grill? Lol! He tends to do that…when his breath is below freezing. I threaten to wrap up like a burrito, in a blanket, this time of year. True story.

I have been doing a little “winter reset” around the Farmhouse. That keeps Old Man Winter off of my back. Little bright touches of pretty.

My in-laws gave me this gorgeous, handmade, sign for Christmas. It’s the perfect touch for a more neutral palette after the holiday season. Fresh and clean. January is good for that. I got a slow start with that…but I’m getting a little skedaddle in my get along now. (If you don’t speak Ozarkian…that means I finally got in gear…on week two.) Burritos don’t get much done.

Our sweet friends gave us this ottoman. It’s so cozy and our kids love it. I was gonna put it in the basement but I got overruled. That’s okay…cozy helps keep Old Man Winter at bay. Crusty ol’ feller.

Hello sweet Dirt Roaders! How is life treating you? I hope that you all had a Merry Christmas and are having a happy start to 2018. Whew! Can you believe it? Time flies!

We have been fighting off sinus germs here. It hasn’t been super fun. It’s also freeeeeeezing cold here in southern Missouri. I guess it is winter though, at least in our neck of the woods.

The Mr. braved the frosty weather and grilled steaks over the holiday. They were really good. A little taste of summer…in the heart of winter.

I found the quote above somewhere on the internet. I think it’s fitting for a blank page, how about you? “where no foot has been before…” God is like that. He beckons us to put down our fear and run to Him, as He guides. What better way to blaze the trail of a new year, than to follow the Leader?

Happy Thanksgiving

country life, farmhouse style, thankfulness, thanksgiving

This is always a tough week for me. Thanksgiving is my favorite holiday, as far as the gatherings go. I love the meaning of Christmas…but the commercial side…flips my wig a little. Overwhelms me. Anyway…this is also the week that my sweet daddy went to be with Jesus, four years ago. But…even in that…there is a place for…happy Thanksgiving.

Today when I opened my verse of the day…this was it:

This is the verse that we chose to put on Dad’s stone. Coincidence? I think not. I think that God is so personal in our everyday lives that He parents us. All of us. We just have to listen with an open heart. “With all your heart.”

My parents were so young and crazy. We grew up together. That being said…I feel like I got the best of both of them. That makes me feel loved in a way that I cannot explain. Lord…I am so thankful for the intricate things that you do.

Last night we had Thanksgiving with our babies. We paused to give thanks, taking turns. I sat there and relished their words…but also their sweet faces. It’s always a bit vulnerable when your turn rolls around. I gave thanks for underserved grace, my husband, and then our children. Our kids will always be my greatest accomplishment on this earth. I do not take that lightly and I know that it was a gift given between the Almighty, my husband, and myself.

I hope that your Thanksgiving is full to the brim. I hope that you enjoy it “with all your heart.” I hope that you look at your kids, like my daddy was looking at me, in the photo above. Most of all though…I hope that you feel the presence of Jesus in every corner of your life. He is good to gently flood into a life like that.

Happy Thanksgiving, sweet Dirt Roaders,

Tucking In

When the days grow shorter, do you find yourself tucking in? Gettting chores done earlier is a must around here. Then evening comes earlier and sometimes bedtime.

The Mr. loves this time of year. The time to tuck in the garden, on the years that we have one. The time to make sure the livestock are prepared for the colder months. Also…time to tuck in the swimming pool until spring.

I love fall and winter evenings with a good cup of tea. Maybe a cozy throw too. Just soaking up family life.

May you and yours be tucked in, all nice and cozy, on this Thursday evening. I would love to hear some of your cozy season favorites!
