A Basket Full

Last week we happened upon a fun little grouping of yard sales.  We (the kids, my MIL and I) were headed to one of my favorite little “honey hole” shops at the time.  On the way back, we decided to stop.  I am so glad that we did.  I wound up with a basket full of goodies.  Yes…pun totally intended.  You are welcome. 🙂

SONY DSC

SONY DSC

Somewhere, once upon a time, I spotted a picture of a basket on an entry table.  I am pretty sure it was in a magazine.  Do you remember those?  Long before Pinterest or Instagram I was flipping through the pages of Martha Stewart Living and dreaming up all kinds of home projects.  I still love to do that and still subscribe to some.  Those are simple pleasures that I should actually make more time for.  Anyway, somewhere in my mind, it got lodged that I would love a basket in our entry.  I dreamed of antique quilts stacked inside.  I believe that the basket that I saw was wooden.  As you already know, the one in this story…is not.

SONY DSC

SONY DSC

While at this sale…I walked around this metal basket.  It was full of old board games.  I finally asked the man if it was for sale.  (It wasn’t priced.)  I asked him what he had to have for it.  He said “How about a buck?”  I calmly nodded and said “Okay.”  On the inside…I did a fist pump.  Not that this basket is priceless…but I don’t like to pay huge amounts for my “treasures.” That is part of the fun…the wheelin’ and dealin’.

SONY DSC

The man at the sale told me that he figured the basket went in an old freezer at one time.  It didn’t matter to me.  Baskets of all shapes and sizes catch my eye.  Locker baskets, wooden baskets, egg baskets, bring me all of your baskets. 😉  I kind of have a thing for bowls too.  What is my deal with objects that hold other things?!  Blame my mother.  She is the same way.

SONY DSC

At first, even this morning, I had it in my mind to spray paint this basket.  I was going for white. (Big surprise there.)  Then…the more that I gazed “uponst” it…the more that I liked it in it’s rough…freezer like…state.  Maybe someday it will get a makeover, but for today…I am pretty okay with the “antique silver.”

SONY DSC

As you can see…there are no quilts in the basket.  If I ever buy some sort of sconce light or a pole lamp of sorts for the entry…that might change.  We use this little lamp all the time and I love the warmth that it adds to this area.  Who knows…this fall I may fold something “quilty” to tuck in there.

SONY DSC

If I wasn’t going to use this basket in this way, it would have been a great tool for organization.  That is one reason that I started picking these up at sales.  They are amazing for bath toys if you have little ones.  They are also wonderful on shelves or in pantries to hold pastas or cans. (Then you just slide the basket out.)  We have actually used them before to hold shoes in our laundry/mud room.  Get creative, go wild.  ha!

SONY DSC

I really hope that you are having a good day.  We are enjoying being together…with a few days of relaxing before school starts back up.  This week our pastor’s wife sent a text to me.  This is what it said:  Collect moments…not things.  I love that.  We are trying to do that at the Farmhouse.  Interesting fact…when I took the Love Language test…my primary love language is Quality Time.  I am good with that.

Love from our dirt road to yours,

Thrift Store Score, Canning and Shameless Addiction

Hey guys!  How are you?  We are doing good.  I feel like we had some productive time off…in lots of ways and now I am glad to be back into the swing of things.  It has been very rainy (and a tad dreary) here…but I don’t want to complain.  As much as I love summer sun…I know that our garden and the pond can use the rain. I’m choosing to be mature.  😉

SONY DSC

Speaking of rain, my lands.  The girls and I went, Saturday, to help clean our area youth camp.  It was raining so hard that I thought that I was going to have to pull over.  We got our work done and then on the way back, we hit the thrift.  It was so fun.  I happened upon some things to go with our “grandma’s house in the summer” theme.  This afghan was just sitting there waiting for me in it’s sea foam and mustard loveliness. I have been totally floored by some of the beauties that I have seen on Instagram.  We can never have enough blankets and throws around here.  We love them.  Besides this…I found another goodie that I CANNOT wait to share with you later in the week.  Eeeeep!

SONY DSC

In other news, the first canning of the season has started.  My Pa Pa gave us some cherries from his tree.  They were so good and sour.  I know that may sound crazy to some…but when you mix sour cherries with sugar and make jelly…YUM!  It was so fun to make something to add to the jelly cabinet.  Canning is one of my favorite things to do.  It’s so amazing to me to be able to eat from your own “cans” throughout the year.  It makes me feel very “Proverbs 31ish.”  I was very thankful for the cherries.  Our baby trees aren’t putting off much fruit yet.  Someday!

Last…but certainly not least, my shameless addiction.  Every morning now, I have iced coffee.  I used to not like it but then I found a recipe online and I look forward to it every morning.  I have tweaked it a little, so that it is more calorie friendly.  I can’t remember where the recipe came from or I would give credit for it.  It may be in my Pins…I’m just not sure.  Anyway…here is the recipe.  You are welcome.  😉

SONY DSC

Kelli’s Ice Coffee

Fill a mason jar to the top with ice.

Add three packets of Stevia to a small measuring cup and set it under the Keurig.

Brew Kcup of your choice on smallest setting. (This makes it concentrated.)

Stir Stevia and concentrated coffee.

Pour over the top of ice.

Add 1/2 c. to a c. of almond milk.

Stir and enjoy.

(The next day, get up and make again.)

Have a wonderful Monday, Dirt Roaders.  God loves you!

My Favorite Room

06 Thursday Feb 2014

Posted by Kelli in Farmhouse Style, sCoRiN' some JuNkItY JuNk

Do you guys have a favorite room to decorate and to buy things for.  I do.  Can you guess which one that it is?  I’m sure that this isn’t hard.

SONY DSC

Yes.  It’s our kitchen.  I love to go junking and find vintage kitchen “things.”  Now, that being said, I don’t enjoy clutter…so when you come to my house it’s not unusual for you to leave with something…because I like to keep my treasures at a minimum.

SONY DSC

My newest love is the blue and white Currier & Ives dishes.  For years I have had a few blue and white pieces…but the Currier and Ives were made with a blue that captures my heart.  It’s a little more on the side of navy and a little shy from purple.  Does that make sense?  Of course it does.  My Dirt Roaders are smart.

SONY DSC

What is it about blue that makes my heart sing?  It has always been my favorite.  Isn’t that a fun thing to know about yourself?  It’s always a little sad to me when someone says that they don’t know their favorite color.  I have several that I love (that is the creative in me) but I could answer “blue” without hesitation.

SONY DSC

For years I didn’t really decorate with blue.  Isn’t that crazy? It wasn’t super-trendy for a while.  Shame on me.  I say that because of this one reason:  I have never been happier with my junking finds and my decor…than I am now.  I guess that I just needed to hone in on what I really loved and let the rest go.  This is a good place to be.  Sometimes…I think that it comes with age.  Eeeeeeek!  lol! Did I just admit that?  Please pass the Oil of Olay.

SONY DSC

I know that I have asked you all a dozen times if you follow Miss Mustard Seed.  I love her blog.  I think that it was one of those moments…where you just happen upon someone that has similar tastes and you hear angels singing.  Okay…not really..but her style is amazing to me.  It’s such a mix of farmhouse style and elegance.  I love that.  Plus…it’s full of BLUE!  😉  Heavenly. (The baker’s twine that is wrapped around my butter paddle…that was inspired by her photos.  I always want to give credit, where credit is due.)

I hope that your day is lovely…after all…it’s Thursday!  My favorite!  If you have a minute…leave me a comment!  I love to hear from you.  Tell me your favorite room to decorate and go junkin’ for.  I really wanna know!

Living kinda cray-cray after all of these snow days,

Happy Little Turtle

Did I show you the turtle that I picked up at a junk store?  Hang on just a minute…while I go check.  I will be right back.  Okay…I’m back!  I had to look through my last few posts, because I couldn’t remember if I had shared the happy little turtle with your or not.  He’s so cute.  I named him Speedy.

SONY DSC

He is probably someone’s creation from the 1980’s.  I cleaned him up and stuck a piece of Aloe Vera in him.  There is something about the little smile on his face that really perks me up.  God knew that I needed a little something on the day that I found Speedy.  Isn’t it amazing, the way that He works in our everyday lives…when there is so much more out there besides little old us?  I’m so thankful for a relationship with Him.

(I have just realized that I used the word “little” way to much.  I am past caring though…because we have a cold/flu bug going out here and I feel like falling over.)

We will survive!

The Bathroom Cart Makeover (Before)

15 Friday Nov 2013

Happy Friday all!  Are we excited?  Of course we are.  Today, I’m going to give you the” before” of my lovely bathroom cart.  You have already had a sneak peak of the “after” in my previous post…but today we are just going to visit about the “before.”  I gotta keep you in suspense…so you will come back for more.

I’m sure that you have seen these little kitchen carts before.  I have always loved them…but I didn’t ever come upon one that I just HAD to have.  Well…this one…was only 3 dollars baby!  Can you believe that?  I was very excited…but trying to keep my cool, you know how that goes.

SONY DSC

On with the story…I have been wanting a little shelf or rack for our master bathroom.  After much contemplation, (and a little hashing and brainstorming with a friend) I thought…”ahhh ha!”  I can transform that kitchen cart with a bit of paint and have my little, handy-dandy rack.

SONY DSC

I can’t wait to show you the finished result.  Stay tuned for the “after” next week.  I’m pretty sure that you will be amazed at what a little imagination and a can of spray paint can do.  THREE DOLLARS!  Can you believe it?  I know.

SONY DSC

I hope that you have a wonderful weekend.  I’m going to do some spiffing here today and then maybe run by a little junk place…where I spotted an old ski for $5.00.  I’m thinkin’ that it would look so cozy for winter.  I hope that it’s still there.  Oh my, the thrill of the hunt.

Jesus loves you, Dirt Roaders!

A Little Retro Fabulousness

13 Friday Sep 2013

Last Friday…I went and picked my MIL up. (Not literally….in the truck.)  We do that sometimes.  It gives us both a little break from everyday life.  On that particular day, one of her neighbors had a little yard sale going on.  Of course we stopped.  We wouldn’t think of letting you down in that area.

Now…before I show you the picture I have to tell you something.  You might laugh at me…but here it goes.  I have always been a little bit enthralled by these things.  I don’t even know what they are called.  I just know that the organized woman in me has always thought that they were nifty.  My husband’s granny used to have a TURQUOISE one.  Why, oh why, (slaps forehead with palm) did I not ask for that when they were having the sale?  DUMB Unfortunate.  Anyway…maybe it stems from growing up with a really old fridge.  Our fridge was the rounded kind that had a pretty turquoise interior.  If I’m not mistaken…it was the kind with the lovely script inside that labeled the drawers and things.  So that brings us to this…and my fetish for words and fonts and storage:

SONY DSC

See!  Isn’t she beautiful!?  I actually have foil and wax paper and paper towels in there!  So handy dandy.  The big bonus was…that if I couldn’t have it in turquoise….faux wood grain is the next best thing right?  Of course!  I told the Mr. years ago that wood was going to come back with a bang…and I was right.  It’s everywhere…and I’m kind of loving it.  I can’t believe that I said that.  It’s true though.  Maybe I need a wood grain station wagon to go to yard sales in.  Now wouldn’t that be a hoot!?! (MIL used to have one.)

SONY DSC

I hope that you have a wonderful day, Dirt Roaders.   I hope that you find a bargain that will knock your socks off.  I forgot to mention that my treasure only took one American dollah from my cute little Vera Bradly wallet.  (Sis. B. I threw that in for you.)  That is my kind of junkin’ right there.

Betsey is Her Name

Have you noticed that people are hanging deer antlers on their walls and fake cow heads?  It’s true.  It’s the thing to do.

image

The other day I was out junking with my momma and ran across this little beauty.  I believe that she was a towel or necklace holder in her former life.  She had a price sticker on the back from a store that was in business here…yeaaaaars ago.  It was called West Gibsons and then later West’s.

image

When I saw Betsey…..I knew that she needed to come home with me.  I had spray paint in mind.  I could see my own little version of the ever popular cow head.

I am so pleased that I found her.  Betsey is right at home in the Farmhouse kitchen.  She watches me cook.  That is fine by me.

Happy Sunday evening, Dirt Roaders!

Kelli

p.s. I had a picture of Betsey’s “before”…..but I think someone me accidently deleted it.  Anyway…she was white…with crazy gold eyes.  Much better now!

Happy Weekend!

So tell me, Dirt Roaders.  Are you going to go junkin’ this weekend?  Junkin’ is fun.  It’s relaxing and it’s a thrifty hobby…most of the time.

This little jar was a junkin’ find.  If you follow me on Instagram (alongthedirtroad) you have already seen it.  It came from the thrift store.  It wasn’t as cheap as I would have liked…but I’m sure that it was way cheaper than I would have paid…if it had of been new.

SONY DSC

I will not be junking.  I have a wedding to attend and coordinate.  Wish me luck.  This is the first time that I have had this job in a wedding.  Actually…keep the luck…just say a prayer for me…please.  🙂

Maybe you are going to pull out your fall decor?  Is that jumping the gun?  Maybe.  My MIL and I were talking about this though…and we both love to decorate for fall.  It’s our favorite.  So…you know…it’s your house…do whatcha want.  I may wait a while…but…that doesn’t keep me from picking up a few things here and there.

SONY DSC

Whatever you do this weekend, I hope that you enjoy your home.  I hope that you find little things to do that make you feel cozy and thankful to God above for His provision in your life.  After all…we just borrow these things for a while.  Isn’t it fun though? That ol’ Proverbs 31 gal…she had it right…making things cozy for her family.  I believe that her bunch loved coming back home to her.  By the grace of God…I want it to be that way for mine.

Needin’ to scratch that junkin’ itch!

Do you ever…like…go for a while without doing something that you love and then all of the sudden, it dawns on you…that you miss it?

SONY DSC

I haven’t been junkin’ for a while.  That’s totally fine because we have been super busy and I have been loving all of the time with the kids.  It’s just that I have been having these daydreams about enamelware.

SONY DSC

As if that wasn’t bad enough…my friend Lynette…found this super cool antique egg box…and she rescued it from the trash!  Can you believe it?  That is like a dream come true for a junker!

SONY DSC

So…in the near future, I may have to scratch the ol’ junkin’ itch.  I have a hankerin’ for some enamelware with the blue lip.  It’s my favorite.

SONY DSC

Have a wonderful day, Dirt Roaders!  I hope that you find a wonderful FREE treasure…just like Lynette.

Whew! We are breaking out in SUMMER VACATION!

17 Friday May 2013

Are you terribly excited that it’s summer vacation? Around here…school is out. We attended our last graduation of the year, last night. Today, I think that I am just kinda chillin.’  Chillin’ and thinking about summer projects.  How fun is that?  I know…fun.

Yesterday…my MIL called and said something very precious.

Me: Hello?

Mother-in-law: I found an old door!

SONY DSC

Woo Hoooooooo!  Are you excited?  Okay…let me explain.  I had told my MIL that I would love to have an old door to hang on the wall in our master bedroom.  I was going to add coat hooks to it.  She has been on the hunt since…so you can imagine our excitement.  You can also imagine our excitement….because said door was in an old house that was going to be dozed and we were going to go poke around in it.

It was time for an adventure.  We constantly cautioned each other to watch for copperheads and poison ivy.  I got to see my mother-in-law grab a hammer and get down to business beating an old shutter and some siding apart.  I gave praise to Jesus…when the nail that could have went up through my foot…just stuck up the side of my shoe. (That was close.)  People that drove by probably thought that we were nuts, hoisting that old door into my husband’s truck.  Yes…we have muscles and we will use them…to heave junk. (Have I mentioned that the living room had hardwood flooring?  Yeah…sad.  I could just see it…polished up.)

SONY DSC

After I got this well-loved beauty home, and looked her over… I think that I’m going to just prop it up against the wall and add two coat hooks.  I love the farmhousy feel that it has.  It needs a good bath but I’m not sure about repainting.  I’m kinda in love with its chippyness.  It even has a little patch of blue.  Be still my little junkin’ heart.

SONY DSC

Are you wondering about the coffee bean sacks yet?  Those are just a little sneak peek of what may become curtains.  I thought that you might like to see a bit of what was up my sleeve for this summer vacation.  We also have a paint project that I’ve mentioned before.  I need to start it pretty quick.  I have two precious ones…patiently waiting on that one.  (To my Mr.: Are you ready to trim?) 😉

SONY DSC

Have a wonderful weekend, Dirt Road Sweeties.  I cannot wait to share our summer and our projects with you… from along the dirt road.

Smiles!
