What is your favorite thing about home?  A few of mine are peace, relaxation, rest, and at the top of all of that…coziness.

Maybe we embrace it with age.  I don’t know though…because our kids love coziness too.  When I was a kid..I would snuggle down into my…waterbed. Yes…it was the eighties and that was cool.  I actually slept in that bed until 1995.

Anyway…we are big on piles of blankets, quilts, and afghans around here.  You know…coziness.

I’m thinking that coziness is addicting…how about you?

Are you there yet?

Are you dreaming about cooler weather and crisp leaves?

Are you putting out pumpkins and candy corn?

Tell the truth. 😉

I’m not quite doing all of that…but I am hankerin’ a little.  Dreaming…maybe.  Ready for a new season…undoubtedly.

coffee, farmhousestyle

Piddling around a bit this morning…so I spruced up our little spot for coffee.

Isn’t coffee a good friend? Okay…not really a friend…but the very smell is comforting to me.  It reminds me of grandparents. It says all things…cozy.  Coffee…oh how I love thee.

I know that not everyone loves it…so maybe a little tea station instead?  Okay…a soda fountain on the counter.  Now there is an idea!  Lol!

Have a wonderful weekend Dirt Roaders!

I hope that your Tuesday is easy and breezy.

I hope that everything falls into place and you find time to just…enjoy.

I hope that you get an extra cherry in your shake at Sonic.

I hope that you get an extra fry in your box at McDonalds.

I hope that you get an extra squirt of syrup at the snow cone stand.

(I don’t recommend eating all of that in one day.)

I hope that today is easy breezy.  You deserve it.

I hope that you are first to the trough. (That one is for all of you livestock that read this blog.)

The Feeling of Home

This morning I stood in our kitchen and just absorbed.  I absorbed the light, oxygen, and the feel of things.  Our home is about so much more than decor.  Our home is about a feeling.

I want our family and others to feel welcome in our home.  I want them to feel the peace of God that we carry in our hearts.  I don’t want them to feel that they are in a museum.  I don’t want them to feel that everything is untouchable.  I do want them to feel a home that is lived in.

When kids come over to stay with our kids…I tell them to make themselves at home.  They do.  Most of them are return visitors and they know the casual way that we live here.  They know that this home is based on respect for others and grace.  A pretty healthy balance that we strive for.

Years ago my mom told me that my step-dad’s motto for company was “If we have it…you are welcome to eat it.”  I love the generosity in that.  What a joyful way to live…putting the wants and needs of others before your own. What an example to me…and he probably doesn’t even know it.

Home is a beautiful word.  What we make it mean for others…is up to us.  As adults…we get to choose how our home feels.

Love from the Farmhouse,

Kelli

p.s.  I asked our kids how our home felt to them and this is what I got:

Cozy, fun, happy, inviting, cheerful, joyful, loving, and bright.

I am grateful and humbled by their answers and I know that these things have only come through the grace of God. All glory to Him. ❤️

A Place to Hang Your Hat

Are you guys crazy about the farmhouse style hooks that are popping up everywhere?  I am.  I have been adoring them from afar for a while.  I think that a place to hang your hat is a special thing.

I actually happened upon some a few weeks back.  I left them where they were though.  Last weekend though…I was in TJ Maxx and found these beauts.

They were very  friendly, cost wise, and I just couldn’t pass them up.  I am actually thinking about using them in our master bedroom.

Okay…so that brings me to this:

This is available today at Farmhousewares.com.  It is EXACTLY what I have been looking for.  Very exciting stuff.  I may swap out the hooks that I have in our entry with one of these.  I can’t wait to get it.  I am also excited that I left the others behind…a few weeks ago. Isn’t it fun when you keep something in mind and wait for it?  Sometimes that is hard to do…but I am a tad picky about not bringing something home…unless I really like it. I really like these places to hang your hat.

Love from the Farmhouse,

Kelli

p.s.  This is not a paid post. Totally my opinion and excitement. 😉

farmhouse style, light, salt, welcome

Hey guys!  How are you?  I just wanted to do a little post to welcome the new kids to the Farmhouse.  Today Jennifer at Town and Country Living shared our home and there are lots of new folks joining us.  Thank you so much Jennifer.  It has been so fun.

As she mentioned in her post, that you can read here, we do have a little farm with cows, goats, chickens, rabbits, dogs and cats.  Before we had the farm though…we had the farmhouse, and that has been the epitome of this little blog.  Simple home décor…that you can actually work into your life…without breaking budget.  I love good junking trips and well-loved treasures.  I don’t want to bring things home that can’t be used or loved by our family. On my Instagram account…it says Faith, Family and Farmhouse Style.  That is the order that we go in around here.  Without the first two…farmhouse style is nothing.  I believe in a balanced, well rounded life.  I’m sure that you have heard the saying, “I need a little bit of coffee and a whole lot of Jesus.”  Just go ahead and sign me up for that.

We had a little weekend get-away for my husband’s birthday.  It was a time to celebrate him and give him a breather. We actually honored the Sabbath in our hotel room this morning. We try to teach our kids the importance of that…even when you aren’t with your fellow believers.  It was such a sweet time…studying about the importance of God’s word. That brings me to the picture above…in case you were wondering. 😉

We live in the Ozarks…which is close to Silver Dollar City.  I love to visit their pottery shop.  It is such a sweet little place.  Sometimes the potter will be there working and sometimes the shop is quiet with the ladies working the register.  Last year, the Mr. bought a pie plate for me.  I thought that it would be fun to buy a piece of pottery each year.  Yesterday, I found the salt crock.  I loved it at first sight.  I am an artsy kind of gal…so pottery just warms my heart.  (One day I shall have a wheel…good Lord willin’.)  I am a huge fan of blue, my favorite color for always, so…that was a plus.  Then of course…the fact that we keep salt in a crock on the counter…worked.  I think that the main thing though is the lettering.  I can always use a reminder that I need to be salt and light.  Matter of fact…I prayed that very thing before we went on this trip.  You never know who you will meet up with that just needs a kind smile.  Sometimes, just holding the door for someone, it speaks volumes.  A steady reminder that we are the salt of the Earth? Yes please.

I hope that you feel welcome dropping by this little blog.  It’s just a little place of real life and home.  It’s a place of celebrating God’s blessings.  A little spot of light and warmth…to come in out of the cold.  I’m glad that you are here.

Love from the Farmhouse,

Busy, Busy, and Busy

busy, farmhouse style, quiet time

Isn’t May a crazy time of year?  Not quite as packed as Christmas…but it plays a close second. We are definitely busy, busy, and busy right now.

SONY DSC

In just a bit I am going to go fire up the oven and bake a cherry pie, to share with our church folks.  I just thought that I would pop in and get your thoughts on busyness.  How do you handle it?  Do you have a secret weapon?

wpid-IMG_20140131_082817.jpg

I used to let busyness totally throw me for a loop.  Ask the Mr.  It was bad.  It’s funny…I was so much harder on myself when I had three babies under six.  I guess wisdom comes with age.  Now I try to take things in stride and prioritize.  I have also realized that I don’t have to volunteer for every single thing.  There are plenty of others that will pitch in.  Maybe it all comes back to that grace that we talked about the other day.  I have realized that it starts with me.  I have to give myself some grace.  We are learning this together as a family.  We have all heard that “All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy.”  Well…we have lots of work to do…but a healthy balance makes it all good.

SONY DSC

Now…when things are crazy-busy, I do fear forgetting things.  I have to write things down and put things in my phone.  (Do you have the Cozi app?  It’s awesome!)  (No laughing Mr.) Today, is a crazy-busy day from start to finish…so we shall see how all of this goes. 😉

SONY DSC

Above, I asked if you had a secret weapon.  I do.  Well…actually it’s no secret.  It’s something that I would like for the whole world to know.  It’s my quiet time with the Lord.  It grounds me and strengthens me…like no other.  I long for that time with Him.  In a busy, crazy, and sometimes scary world, sitting down in the presence of Jesus makes all of the difference.  That may be offensive to some and they may even click “unfollow” but it is the very essence of who I am.  I hope that you are not offended by Him.  He loves you, sweet Dirt Roader.  He loves you dearly.

SONY DSC

I hope that Monday treats you kind. (Do I hear Dolly Parton?) Oh wait…that was “life” not “Monday.” Go ahead…roll your eyes. 😉  Seriously…I hope that your week is amazing.  I hope that if you are busy up to your earlobes….that you remember to pause and take care of yourself…body, soul, and spirit.

farmhouse life, farmhousestyle, farming

Did you get up with the chickens?  I did.  I was actually awake before the rooster this morning.  Sometimes that is the way that it goes.  He was standing in the mud with his wives…waiting to be fed.  That is Farmhouse Life.  It’s all about caring for others…people, animals, and vegetables.  Just ask Adam and Eve. 😉

SONY DSC

Farm life isn’t new to me.  I grew up very close to my grandparent’s little farm.  By the time that I came along they mostly had cows, a dog, and a barn cat.  When my dad was little they had hogs too.  He also had an old mare that he would ride.  My step-dad’s parents have always farmed too. (It seems like most people did in that generation.) They even kept an old horse for me to ride.  Ol’ Beauty.  What a gal.  She was so barn-soured that when you turned her back toward the house and let her go…we could have won the Kentucky Derby.  Goodness gracious.  I wound up in trouble over that a few times.  Beauty was kind of old and poorly shod for me to let her act so young.

It’s so fun to watch our kids on our little farm.  Their dad decided early on that he would buy the feed but they could have the money out of the eggs.  Their job is to wash them before refrigeration.  Want to know a fun fact?  In Europe…they don’t refrigerate.  That is because when a chicken lays an egg…there is a protective coating on them.  It protects the egg from bacteria unless you wash it off.  So…if you do wash them…get them into the fridge soon.  Our kids get to split the money…because each day it/s a different person’s turn to wash eggs.  You better believe that after scrubbing all that stuff off…they want their cut.  I think that it’s pretty awesome…the lesson that their dad is teaching them with the eggs.  It’s not that they are making a killing…but they are learning very valuable tools for their own lives.

wpid-img_20140430_092726.jpg

Our farm is small and young.  It is also just one aspect of our lives, but we enjoy the richness that it provides.  I understand that not everyone wants to add farming to their list of things to do…but we love the little bit of it in our neck of the woods.  I feel close to God…when I am in the middle of His creation.  I feel like a helpmate when I am canning veggies that my husband planted or helping him with the care of an animal.  I feel like I am teaching our children, when we are hot and sweaty, bent over green bean plants…split up into two teams, seeing who can finish their rows first.  It’s hard work…but it nourishes my soul.

Trusting and Junking

God's love, junking, trusting, vintage

Last night in our mid-week service, our pastor’s wife talked about the verse above.  It’s found in the book of Proverbs in the Bible, chapter 3, verses 5-6.  It was wonderful.  I needed to hear that.  This is the verse that we had inscribed on my dad’s stone.  It’s also the only verse that I know of that he memorized.  He read his Bible each day…but quoting wasn’t one of his things.  This lesson was balm to my heart.  I just needed it for lots of areas in my life.  I’m sure that most people do.  Life is beautiful and wonderful and I live in awe of it…but it is also hard.  Even in that…God is so very good.  Expecting good things…I believe that God wants us to do that.  Trusting…comes into play there.

Now…about the junking.  Isn’t this little guy so sweet?  I’m not sure why I have been so drawn to these little vintage dogs of late.  I think that it might be the era.  I love vintage prints, especially with trees. (I got one of those too…I will have to show you…soon.)  This little guy reminds me of a doggy that is on my Granddad’s dresser. His grandma bought it for him, when he was a little boy, I do believe.  I love things like that.  This one is actually a bank.  His head comes off…so you can get the money out.  Something is missing from his collar…but I still love him.  His crackly goodness is very appealing to this vintage-loving soul.

Have you been needing to trust a little more lately?  Sometimes fear rises up…and tells us all sorts of bad things.  Trusting God…helps us take a deep breath.  We all need that…don’t we?  What about junking?  Have you found any treasures like the two dollar dog?  I would love to hear about either subject.  Leave me a comment and I will try to get back to you.

Have a wonderful Thursday, sweet Dirt Roaders,

Sigturquoise
