Summertime!

It’s here! Are you ready? At this moment…there is a guy in our back yard digging a hole for our new…old…swimming pool. Did I lose you on that one? We purchased it used. Yes…now it makes sense. It seems appropriate though, on the first day of summer.

image

Do you have lots of plans for this summer? We are actually having a little staycation this week.  Do you love those?  I do.  I love having time to just enjoy being together.  Our kids are little hermits…so they do well with it.  (Okay…they really aren’t hermits…but staying at home doesn’t bother them.  I love that.)

SONY DSC

Last night, around dusk, we went out on the porch and just…enjoyed.  We sang several songs.  It was so fun.  I wondered if our neighbors could hear us.  Sound carries through these Ozark hills.  If they did…they heard us lifting praises up to our Lord.  That thought, makes me happy.

Whatever you do this summer, Dirt Roaders, I suggest that you take time to just “be still.”  It’s a therapy like no other.  It’s in these times that we are still…that we hear that precious, still small Voice.

Three Smiles for Summer!  🙂 🙂 🙂

Clean laundry room? You didn’t miss it.

Have you ever read that sign…”My house was clean yesterday…sorry you missed it.”  Maybe you have one.  Well thankfully…yesterday, when I had the itch to revamp the laundry room, I had the good sense to snap a few quick shots with my phone.

image

Today….my laundry room isn’t dirty…but I’ve been doing laundry…”to beat the band” so everyone’s stacks are on the table.  Plus, I have swimmers coming in and out from the pool.  So…even though these are cell phone shots…you can be there…yesterday.  You are welcome.  😉

image

See that metal rack?  I had a love/hate relationship with it. I loved the extra storage…but I didn’t actually like to see all of  the stuff.
Enter: duck cloth
I had just enough downstairs in my craft area for a little curtain.  Ahhhh….much better. Plus I love the “farmhousey” that it adds.  All love now.  No hate.  No hate…is good.  I’m glad we had this talk.  😉

image

Of course, I couldn’t resist adding a little pretty to the functional.  You guys know how I roll by now.  The pressure cooker was my Nanny’s.  She is the one that inspired me to start canning in the first place.  (She had already inspired my mom.) When she gave it to me it felt as though she was passing the baton.  She is precious.  I am honored.

Thanks for hanging out in my laundry room with me, Dirt Roaders.  At this farmhouse laundry room…you can find anything from soggy swimming clothes to chicken poop tracked in…so cleaning it is never optional.

Smiles!

What does summer mean to you?

22 Wednesday May 2013

Summer.  I love the word.  I love the season.  Even in the hottest part, there is just something about summer that has always inspired me.  Maybe it’s because I was born in the summer.  We will blame it on that.

My question today is:  What does summer mean to you?

In my mind, there is something almost magical about summer.  There is something beautiful about the plants and bushes that always come back, year after year.  There is something beautiful about clothes hanging on the line and coming back in smelling like sunshine. (Mr.  ..if you are reading this…a clothesline is still on my wish list.)

When I was growing up…summer days spent with my mom were always an adventure.  She just had a way about her…and still does…that made every moment of every day fun. I look back on those days now and realize that I incorporate some of that into the lives of our children.  That makes my heart smile.

One of my very favorite things about summer?  Old yards.  Do you know what I mean?  I do not have an old yard…yet.  Old yards are yards that have been there for years and have been lovingly planted and tended.  Grandma yards.  That is what they are in my mind.  Today….I am sharing with you…one of my favorite places of all time.  To me…this is the epitome of “farmhouse.”  From the yard to the porch to the little fence…this is just me.  This home is on the way to my mom’s house.  I’m not sure if anyone lives there anymore but….to me…it is beautiful.

SONY DSC

I could go on and on about the way that the river draws me in the summer or swimming or round bales here in the Ozarks or most of all laughing children that are home for the summer.  I will save that for another day.  Today…because you are my sweet Dirt Roaders…I am sharing some of my summer heart and my all time favorite farmhouse.

Smiles!

Weekend Plans

03 Friday May 2013

Hey Friends!  It’s Friday…you did it!  Do you have big plans?  The older I get…the more I love having no plans.  Is that crazy?  I crave quiet moments and peace.  Quick…pass me the Geritol. ha!

converse

Are you guys getting winter weather?  If you are…and you are longing for spring, I’m sorry.  It’s not snowy here.  It’s just very rainy.  We can use the rain though.  It gets very dry during the summer in the Ozarks, most years.

SONY DSC

Maybe you are going to cook something to tingle all of the taste buds in your family?  That would be fun.  Or maybe you have a stack of cast iron that needs to be seasoned.  That sounds like work…but I enjoy it.  When I was just a new bride I would come home from work and start supper in  our tiny little kitchen and relax.  There is something about the kitchen that does that for me.  I am an old soul…I guess.

iron skillet

Maybe you have a little DIY planned.  We have a little room painting on the agenda…but not this weekend.  I’m getting excited about this little project that is brewing though.  More about that later.

SONY DSC

If your weekend is full of laundry,  I’m sorry.  Don’t spend all of your time working on it.  Or if you have to at least read a good book between switching it out.  Or go outside and build a snowman in between.  (I’m sorry if that is a reality in your neck of the woods.)  Or you could lay on the couch and eat bonbons between loads.  That sounds relaxing.

laundry

Whatever you do, Dirt Roaders, don’t forget to reflect on the blessings that God is giving you.  Maybe you can find a small quiet corner in the middle of the chaos and reflect on all things wonderful…and take deep breaths.  Stress…strain and worry are not a part of His plan for us.  Don’t forget to relax…no matter what your weekend plans are.  You are important…..God said so.

Pansy Massacre, Junk and a Dead Dog

01 Wednesday May 2013

Okay…okay.  It wasn’t as bad as all that.  Pretty bad, but not that bad.  Would you like to hear about it?  Of course you would.  You’re here, ain’tchee?  (Sorry…it’s the Ozarkian coming out.)

Last spring the birds were singing and the grass was…um…greening and I was in the mood to plant flowers.  The greenhouse is one of my happy places.  I love all of the growing things and the sun warming my face.  The only thing is…it costs money to go to the greenhouse.  I try not to go too much.  This actually has nothing to do with the story because the flowers came from Wal-Mart.  hmmmm…..Where am I?  ha!  Just kidding.  Onward…Dirt Roaders.

pansies

So I was at Wal-Mart with the Mr. and I spotted these beautiful, faded, purplish-bluish pansies.  When I saw them I thought of country roads and little grandmas with aprons and all things cozy and farmhousey.  I knew that they would look amazing in the old wash tub that Mom gave me.  (There is the junk that we were waiting for.) I also have a thing for old wash tubs.  Greenhouses and wash tubs, who knew?

pansies 2

We bought the flowers.  I was so excited.  As you can tell, it doesn’t take much.  I planted them in the wash tub.  There they were sitting on our front porch…right by the door. So quaint…my little pansies.  I could sit in our porch swing and enjoy their beauty that seemed like something from yesteryear.  Right up my alley.

Until.  Yes…the next day or maybe two..(it was so horrific I might have suppressed some of it)…I went downstairs and peeked at my pansies through the sidelight.  That was my first mistake that day.  Our stupid precious Basset Hound, Suzie had decided that she loved the pansies too.  She loved them so much that she was going to dig them out and lay her big bod…in the wash tub.  It was a mess.  A pansy massacre.

pansies 1

Do you see Suzie “innocently” waiting for me to go inside? Yeah…me too. (Pardon her…she isn’t very decent.) ha!

I don’t have a picture of the pansy massacre.  Oh and by the way…I was just kidding about the “dead dog” part.  We love Suzie.  She is stubborn and crazy but we love her.  It seems that, anything we put outside…our pets assume is for their enjoyment.  Sigh.  What I put up with to have a good, barking dog.  She is fierce you know.  😉

pansies 3

Yes…that is a dog ear in the lower left corner. She was biding her time.

Pray for my wash tub, Dirt Roaders.  This year it’s hosting geraniums…that I actually kept inside all winter.  I love geraniums.  My big geranium is in a rusty bucket and the small one is in a flower-pot.  When they bloom I will try to take a picture for you.  As long as Suzie minds her own business…that is.

A Cup of Energy

30 Tuesday Apr 2013

I have a little friend that sits on our counter.  It waits for me each morning.

SONY DSC

It brews me a wonderful cup of energy.  The cup of energy makes me feel bullet-proof for a bit.  That sounds like a drug.  Hmmmm.

Yesterday…I went without my cup of energy.  I felt it all day long.  Today I will remedy that.  My cup of energy will be pretty high up on my list of things to do.

When did I get old enough to need coffee to function with efficiency?  Isn’t that for old people?  People with gray hair.  Oh yeah…those aren’t blonde shimmers are they?

I remember my grandparents sitting at their farmhouse breakfast table, drinking coffee out of  orange coffee cups.  Looking back…I’m sure that they were Fire King or Anchor Hocking.  Anyway, they would sit there and while their coffee was still hot they would use a spoon and get little sips of it.  They were relishing in a simple pleasure.  I love that.

I hope that I have inspired you to have a “cup of energy” with me today.  I hope that your Tuesday is amazing.  I hope that after you drink your coffee…you can leap tall buildings in a single bound.  After all, you are Dirt Roaders.  Dirt Roaders…have a way of getting things done.  😉

Happy Casual Friday

Hey you guys!  You made it!  It’s Friday! So today…in honor of Friday…we are just going to do casual on the blog.  No real rhyme or reason, just some pretty pictures to look at and maybe gab a little.  Does that sound like a plan to you?  I thought that you would approve.

SONY DSC

(btw:  To all of you newcomers….WELCOME!  We are so glad to have you join us on this little faith filled,  farmhousey, junkin’, gardening, cooking and whatever else we feel like doing…adventure. You can also follow us on Facebook here. We would love to have you join us.)

This is the reason that I originally bought the labels. (Notice: Momma gets the end...she has the biggest purse! ;))

Do you have big fun-filled plans for the weekend?  Maybe you are just going to wind down from a long week.  Both options sound like a good idea to me.

Millie Jane, our brown eyed baby.

Tonight I am going to make nachos for the fam.  I love Friday night suppers.  They are so much more relaxing because we don’t have to rush around to fit in baths, homework and then devotions before bed.  We can take our time.  Life is so fast…it feels good to have a minute to slow down.  Agreed?  I thought so.

Aren't these amazing? I found the jars at the ReStore (four of them) and the Ironstone at the thrift store. (Do you guys follow For the Love of a House? When I saw her jars...I was in love with this idea.)

To all of my super-healthy friends…please close your eyes and scroll down.  I am getting ready to type something that will make you uncomfortable.  Processed Cheese Food.  Are you still with me?  You are brave. We love Rotel, Velveeta and ground beef nachos.  It is so wonderfully creamy, meaty and tomatoey and peppery.  My husband’s cousin Jess makes them this way and it is sooo good.  Healthy people…it will be okay.  We will start eating spinach again soon.  It’s Friday night…live a little.  😉 (If you do make this, add two cans of Rotel.  It’s scrumptious and soupy.  I don’t like it when it’s thick like pudding. If you do…we can still be friends.) 😉

SONY DSC

Whatever you do I hope that you enjoy it.  I hope that you take a few minutes just for you.  I hope that you find a quiet place to reflect on all that you have been blessed with.  I hope that you feel the love of God…warming your heart from the inside out.

Do you remember this cloche? I found it down on the bottom shelf at the thrift store for four dollars. That was a heart thumper...right there. ;)

Happy Weekend, Dirt Roaders!

Spring/Summer Mantle (and of course a little junkin’)

I seriously do not know what my deal is with lemons.  I have been crushing on them…since…well…Christmas.  Remember when everyone was talking Christmas décor and I was planning what I was going to do after the tree came down?  I was thinking on…you guessed it, lemons.

SONY DSC

SONY DSC

(Just a side note:  I love Christmas.  I love the Christ of Christmas.  I love the message of Christmas.  It’s the frenzy that makes me long for January.)

SONY DSC

SONY DSC

So…as soon as the New Year rolled around…I had these big, wonderful faux (Let’s call them faux…because fake just sounds so…well…fake.) lemons under a cloche and on our breakfast nook table.  My kitchen sink faces that way so I could look at these wonderful “faux” lemons often.

SONY DSC

Maybe it is because Ol’ Man Winter has been creaking around and not getting in any type of a hurry.  The length of winter makes me long for the bright and cheery.  Bright and cheery is good.  It makes me feel…well…bright and cheery.

SONY DSC

So…what was I talking about today?  Ahhh yes!  The mantle.  The urn thingys were picked up at a yard sale.  I was so excited that they had two.  I had been wanting two of something to put on each side for a while now.  Junkin’ really pays off if you love that kind of thing.  I love…lovity…love that kind of thing, as you know.

SONY DSC

I thought that the little urns were the perfect place for my lemons.  I love the look of a little boxwood (faux) in there with them.  I am crazy about white but I love bursts of color in there too.  Cheery…ya know?  😉

SONY DSC

Have a great day, Dirt Roaders!  Our Spring/Summer mantle isn’t fancy.  It’s actually pretty plain and simple.  I like décor that makes me want to  take a deep summery breath.  How about you?

Simplified Spring

10 Wednesday Apr 2013

Hey Friends.  I hope that all is well today.  Today I thought that we might chat about some simple things to “springify” your home.  You know…small, subtle touches.  I love all of the beautiful things that I see in Blogville…but sometimes I get so much joy out of just reworking what I already have. Sometimes I pick up something little to add to what is already waiting in our storage area.   Okay then, here we go.

SONY DSC

I love this little basket-type tray that I picked up. I think that I got it at Marshalls.  I did use other things that I already had to fill it though.  I thought that it brightened up our coffee table.

SONY DSC

I found this old basket at the thrift store a while back.  These poor lemons have really gotten a work-out.  I still love them though.  They add so much cheer.  They have been in several different places in our home.

SONY DSC

This white picnic basket was another thrift store find a long time ago.  One day I decided to introduce it to the blue and green craze…with a stack of books.  Just a pop of color on a white basket…but it spreads a little cheer.

SONY DSC

More lemons?  Yes…but this is the last time…today.  I picked this glass piece up at the thrift store one day.( It’s one of my favorite treasures.) I was so excited…it still had the little Tag sticker on the bottom.  It’s on our mantle with faux lemons and boxwood.  So bright and happy.

Bringing spring into your home isn’t hard to do. (Of course, you already knew that.)  In a society that always tells us that we need more…sometimes it’s nice to say…”No thank you…I already have enough.”

Have a wonderful day, Dirt Roaders!
