New Babies at the Farmhouse

29 Tuesday Apr 2014

Yesterday evening was full of five excited folks.  We went and picked up three baby goats to add to our little farm.  You should have heard the name suggestions flying in my husband’s truck.  It was so fun.  Such an adventure.  We love stuff like that.  We loaded up and headed way out in the country to buy our new babies.

image

Our kids used their own money and bought a goat together.  This is their first farm purchase.  They were so crazy-excited.  They have been in the egg business for awhile…but Dad and I foot the bill for that.

image

Myrtle and Peanut…our first goats, were not impressed and were actually quite mean to the babies.  It’s going to be a huge surprise to them…when the babies outgrow them…by about three times.

image

We now have babies at the Farmhouse…with the names of LulaBelle, Peaches and Apache.  I thanked the Lord for the fun bonding experience that this was with our children.  Farming is very hard work…but the lessons learned and the joy in it all…is priceless.

How is it going on your little piece of the planet?  Here at the Farmhouse, there are tons of things on the outside agenda.  That is a good thing…but it will also be nice when a few of them are checked off of our list.

image

I am going to be helping the Mr. today…but I wanted to pop in real quick and chat for a minute.  I promise….soon…I will get totally back in gear.  Life is crazy at times.  Agree?  Ikr!?

image

By the way…another thing that I need to work on is Easter baskets.  I love making those for our kids.  Easter will be here before we know it.

Well….today I will be workin’ like a farmhand…how bout you?

Love,
Kelli

Let’s Talk Agenda

10 Friday Jan 2014

Posted by Kelli in Farmhouse Style, Simply...living

Hello sweet friends!  Are we excited that it’s Friday?  Of course we are.  We are smart enough to put in a good week and then relax and enjoy the fruits of our labor…right?!  Right!  I love it when you agree with me.  Today we are going to talk a little bit about the agenda for Along the Dirt Road in 2014.  I don’t have a huge plan but I do want to do a thing or two differently.  I think that you will be okay with that.

SONY DSC

For starters…I think that I am going to lay off of mmmMonday! for a bit.  I may throw one in there every once in a while but I want to have the freedom to share junk on Monday if the mood hits me.  Or maybe we want to talk about home decor or DIY on Monday.  Okay then, we will.  Don’t fret, my foodie friends.  I will still share recipes because I’m am a born foodie.  I just want to be a little more random with it.  Let’s get crazy.  😉

SONY DSC

I also plan to work on my photography skills a bit more this year, for my benefit and yours.  I have so much to learn but I really enjoy it and I know what I want to see in a shot.  I think that is what spurs me on.  Whether folks realize it or not, photography is work.  I am such an amateur but by the grace of God, I plan to improve.  Pray saints, pray.

SONY DSC

I would love to hear all about what you would like to see on this blog this year.  I am open to your ideas and thoughts.  Matter of fact…I am totally thrilled with your comments.  Please don’t be shy.  It spurs me on when I actually hear from my readers.

SONY DSC

I hope that you have a wonderful weekend, Dirt Roaders.  I hope that you get to pause and reflect on the grace that gets us though our days.  It’s such a gift.  God is rooting for us in 2014.  Don’t forget  it.

mmmMonday! Freezing/Preserving 101

23 Monday Sep 2013

Yes.  You guessed it.  I did not can the pears.  I did not make pear butter or pear jam or pear jelly.  I might do some of that later, but not this time.  By the way…welcome to mmmMonday!  (Just thought that I would throw that in.)  What I did do, or what WE did do, was freeze them.  I’m going to tell you how we did it.

SONY DSC

First of all the pear story is this:  My Paw Paw and Uncle Jay…picked close to eighty pounds of pears.  Yes…that is right.  I had planned to can them…but the process was a tad more lengthy and we were in revival last week at our church AND that was just a lot of pears to process. So…after tossing it around with my Auntie Lynne’s opinion mixed in…freezing became the best option.  When you freeze your fruit…then later when you have more time, you can do the jam, jelly, pear butter or cobblers and crisps.

SONY DSC

Enter:  The Mr.’s mother…a.k.a. The MIL.

She called on the particular day that I was planning on making this happen in our farmhouse kitchen.  She was asking if I had made pear butter yet.  I then proceeded to ask her if she wanted to come over and peel pears with me that after noon.  She said “Yes.” Woot woot!.  I know that I sound desperate, but some of the pears already smelled a tad a lot on the fermented side.  Time was ticking. So, we peeled pears all afternoon and talked and laughed and drank pop (We don’t call it soda.) and both walked away with an injury.  She had a little knot where her knife was bumping her index finger…and mine had a small bruise.  We are peeling machines, let me tell ya.  We even had a peeler…but like the women of years gone by…it was much more enjoyable to do our work with a knife in hand and our jaws flapping. I can’t believe that we didn’t take pictures.  I guess we were too busy and pressed for time.  As Sweet Brown would say…”Ain’t nobody got time for that.”

SONY DSC

The process is so simple for freezing that I can tell you in a few simple steps.

1.  Wash your fruit and peel and core it.

2.  Chunk or dice the fruit.

3. Dice it into a mixture of water, lemon juice and salt. (1 quart of water, 1 tsp. each of lemon juice and salt. I did 2 quarts in each bowl.)

4.  After you have soaked all of your pears, drain and put into freezer bags.  Remove air and lay flat for freezing.

SONY DSC

That is pretty much it, Dirt Roaders.  I’m not sure what all I will make later on with my pears…but freezing is a great way to preserve the fruits of the season when done right.  Especially when you need to get it put up fast so they don’t ruin.

SONY DSC

I hope that you have a wonderful mmmMonday!  I am feeling cozy in my kitchen, now that fall is here.  I hope that you are too!

Up to my ears in pears….with an amazing MIL,

Hydrangea Drying 101

05 Thursday Sep 2013

Posted by Kelli in everyday stuff, fluffin' the nest, Simply...living

Are you drying bushels of hydrangeas today?  You aren’t?  Well…you can.  I am going to tell you how.  Even though you could Google it…I will provide you with the info…free of charge.  Yes…yes…I am sweet that way.

SONY DSC

So….if you have a hydrangea bush…or a friend with a hydrangea bush, please don’t dress in all black and rob your neighbors in the night, (not very friendly) it’s pretty simple and amazing the way that dried hydrangeas last.  Have you seen them everywhere?  They are so pretty.  Ours turn pink and green.  What a pretty combo.

So…basically…the short of it, is this:

1.  Cut your blooms off of the bush after they are dry and papery. (Not while they are still tender.

2.  Cut in different sized stem lengths and remove leaves.

3.  Bring inside…after debugging them…and put them in jars with water.  Give each flower head enough space to breathe.

4.  Set them out of direct sunlight and just leave them be…until they are dry. If they are still not dry after all of the water is gone, add more water and patiently wait.

SONY DSC

I think that baskets of them are lovely.  I also love the look of an old dough bowl with dried hydrangeas.  They will last and you will have a beautiful floral arrangement in your home.  Try it…you might like it.  😉

When mine are done for this year…I will try to remember to let you have a look.  Why?  Because you are Dirt Roaders…and you need to know these things.

Waiting on my hydrangeas,

First of all….the internet has been down again.  Thank heavens for Smarty Pants phones.  😉  (I’m still not sure that I can justify it.  Put it under the recreation heading.) 😉

I have some exciting news for you though!  Our Araucana laid her first egg this week!  You can be sure that I’m crazy about the color!

image

image

Didn’t she do good?  Easter eggs in August.

We also had a little kitchen project this week.  I will give you a little sneak peek and then next week…do some blogging about it and give credit to our inspiration. I am in love.

Do you see it?  🙂

I hope that your weekend is second to none.  Celebrate by doing no labor.  You’ve earned it.

Diggin’ out for fall is almost like Christmas.

Last night…I was sitting here looking around.  Do you do that?  Just gaze around and dream?  I do.  Then out of the blue…something popped into my head.  I have a little twiggy pumpkin that I bought at the end of fall…on clearance.  Just like that…I was super excited.  (No…it doesn’t take much for a sanguine.)

I have wanted one of these twiggy pumpkins for a while. Half price? Even better.

I know that technically, it is still summer.  We have just had crazy fall weather for weeks.  It’s kinda messing with me.  You know what?  I think that I am fixing to cave.  The only time that I have put my fall stuff out, super duper early, was when I was getting ready to have our son.  That year, I put my stuff out at the end of August.  It’s just that I love the pop of orange pumpkins so much…that I am having a hard time waiting.  Don’t get me wrong…I grumble right along with everyone else when they put the next season’s things out too soon at the store.

SONY DSC

Maybe I will just go down to the storage room and look though my stuff and dream.  The good Lord knows that I don’t want time to pass any faster than it already does.  Besides, I think that we are getting ready to start the beadboard birthday project.  We may need all the room that we can get for a few days.  😉

I love all things "punkumy."

Dreaming of fall…

A Little Fall Dreamin’…

Hey Dirt Roaders!  Guess what?  It’s rainy here.  It’s rainy and cozy and I have an Apple Strudel candle burning…and Cider Mill warming in the Scentsy pot.

This pumpkin is another favorite. Along with the little bowl. What a wonderful vingette...favorite things.

Now where did that come from?  Ha!

SONY DSC

Oh my.  There is another one. My apologies to those that are squeezing the last drop out of summer.  We are too…..I just LOVE to decorate for fall….so I can’t help but dream a little.

SONY DSC

Are you feeling the brisk breeze and the warmth of a fluffy sweatshirt…right out of the dryer?

Welcome

Okay….okay.  I know that it’s barely August.  I’m not trying to rush you.  We all know that time seems to pass too quickly as it is.  I guess we could look at it more like…I’m just giving you something to look forward too.

Autumn Wishes

Love from our dirt road to yours,

Happy Weekend!

So tell me, Dirt Roaders.  Are you going to go junkin’ this weekend?  Junkin’ is fun.  It’s relaxing and it’s a thrifty hobby…most of the time.

This little jar was a junkin’ find.  If you follow me on Instagram (alongthedirtroad) you have already seen it.  It came from the thrift store.  It wasn’t as cheap as I would have liked…but I’m sure that it was way cheaper than I would have paid…if it had of been new.

SONY DSC

I will not be junking.  I have a wedding to attend and coordinate.  Wish me luck.  This is the first time that I have had this job in a wedding.  Actually…keep the luck…just say a prayer for me…please.  🙂

Maybe you are going to pull out your fall decor?  Is that jumping the gun?  Maybe.  My MIL and I were talking about this though…and we both love to decorate for fall.  It’s our favorite.  So…you know…it’s your house…do whatcha want.  I may wait a while…but…that doesn’t keep me from picking up a few things here and there.

SONY DSC

Whatever you do this weekend, I hope that you enjoy your home.  I hope that you find little things to do that make you feel cozy and thankful to God above for His provision in your life.  After all…we just borrow these things for a while.  Isn’t it fun though? That ol’ Proverbs 31 gal…she had it right…making things cozy for her family.  I believe that her bunch loved coming back home to her.  By the grace of God…I want it to be that way for mine.

SONY DSC

Smiles!

You are so patient….Dirt Roaders.

Just wanted to let you know that in the middle of all of the crazy that is called “our life” right now….that I am still here.

SONY DSC

Truth is….my PawPaw has been in the hospital…and we have some other family members that are on Hospice…so things have been a bit touch and go.

SONY DSC

Prayers for our neck of the dirt road are so appreciated.  We shall return to your regularly scheduled program…shortly.

SONY DSC

Thank you, my patient Dirt Roaders.  Happy Tuesday evening to you.
