Relax!

What relaxes you?  A few days away?  A bubble bath?  A stroll through an antique store? A good book and an old quilt? All of the above?

image

Whatever it is…..it’s the weekend.  Take some time apart for you.  God approves of rest and happiness for our bodies.  He knows that this world can be crazy and hectic.  He loves us…..and wants us…..to love us too.  How do I know?  It’s all in His word.

image

We have had a crazy few months at The Farmhouse.  Some of the things that keep me sane are God’s word and little mini vacations.  A few minutes with my arms around my husband and children or a laugh with a friend.  These are little moments of goodness that keep us going. They are gifts from the Creator…when we are dealing with cancer in our loved ones or hospital stays or financial troubles.

image

Life is full of hard things….but it’s also full of wonderful things too.  We all go through hard times….but we need to remember to look around…and to take the time to relax and enjoy.

image

God thinks that you are awesome, Dirt Roaders.  After all…..He made you…..in His image.

image

Please take time for you….and enjoy a little mini vacation.

The Reasons That I Blog

25 Wednesday Sep 2013

If you are not a blogger, have you ever wondered why someone would do it?  Can you imagine sitting down at your computer a few times a week and coming up with something to share?  Well, today…I am going to share with you the reason that blogging has become a part of my life.

SONY DSC

A few years ago, I didn’t even really know what a blog was.  Someone said “You should start a blog.” and I was like “A whu?” (A what?) I think that part of it was because I was always sharing recipes and home decor ideas on Facebook…so it seemed like a logical thing to do.  On August 18, 2012 Along the Dirt Road was born.  I was pretty excited.

cropped-fb-header.jpg

The most wonderful thing about the blog is the fact that I can share the love of Christ with anyone who happens to stop by.  You don’t have to read very far into my posts to find out that I am a Christian.  The fact that I live in a nation that I can declare this openly, means very much to me.  It’s not the most popular thing to be sometimes…but I am.  Jesus Christ is my personal Savior.  Wouldn’t it be a wonderful thing…if with a few humble words…I could let someone know that He could be their Savior too.  When you are a stay-at-home-momma….you don’t always get the opportunity to tell folks that God loves them…face-to-face.  On this blog, as in every day life,  I try very hard to be real with you and true to myself.  Jesus loves me…and Jesus loves you.  I want all of my readers to know that.

luke fence

Another reason that I blog is my love of family and home.  I really feel that my own personal calling in life is to be a wife and mother.  You might say….”Now hold on just a minute, isn’t the Mr. a minister?”  He sure is.  As a teenager, he felt that God had called him into the ministry.  I married him, knowing this and accepting my part in his calling.  We do not pastor, but we do have an area of ministry in our church and some outside.  I love this part of our life very much and we are very serious about it…but even before that, we have a family. We try, in earnest, to keep our priorities straight. We try to give our children a healthy balance between home and what goes on outside of our doors.  Our children have been raised to know that Jesus is the main member of this family. They know that God comes first.  They have grown up….counting an extra…that we cannot see, but that we can feel. We also teach them that we live on a steady diet of mercy and grace…because sometimes humans fail.  Getting up and trying again…is the important thing.

I miss those tiny thumbs that made some of those heads.

Soooooooo, Sweet Dirt Roaders…..because of my love for home…I try to document some things to share with you a few times a week.  I love home decor.  I love country life.  I love cooking.  Maybe I should open a Cracker Barrel.  😉  I try to throw a few DIY things in there for you and as a matter of fact…I will try to share my fall wreath for our front door this week.  You might want to make one for yourself.

Simplicity is for me. Happy Wednesday, Dirt Roaders!

This is our porch from last year.

This blog is really not all about me, believe it or not.  If I can inspire one person to look to God for the answers that they seek…every post that I have labored over will be worth it to me.  If I can inspire you to find joy in the things that you already have and show you a way to revamp them a tad….mission accomplished.  My blog tends to be a little more on the laid back side.  I hope that you don’t mind.  I seek peace for my life…in a chaotic world.  I’m just trying to hand a little out to you also.

others

I hope that you have a wonderful day!

Love from our dirt road…to yours,

Sigturquoise

p.s. Thank you for being patient with me while my posts have been a little sparse.  Life has a way of going crazy at times…..sometimes for months.  🙂 I’m so thankful that God gives us peace and grace during it all.

It’s Friday…again!

Are your plans big?  Are you so excited that you can’t stand yourself?

SONY DSC

Maybe you just plan on relaxing and snuggling up in an old quilt.  That sounds wonderful right now…because it’s raining here.

SONY DSC

Whatever you do, Sweet Dirt Roaders…do it with love.  Enjoy peace.  Take time to relax…and take time to thank the One that gives all of the good gifts that we see around us.  He loves that.  He loves it when you enjoy your relationship with Him.  I promise.  He wrote a very lengthy love letter that “tells us so.”

Happy Friday, my friends!

Feeling kinda droopy and relaxed….cause of the rain,

Everyday Counts

Don’t forget that everyday of your life counts.

The day that you took your first breath was very important…but so is each one.

We don’t want to take even one day for granted.

Each day is an opportunity to do the job that God has placed before us.

Each day is a gift.

A precious gift from the Creator of all.

Lord, please help me look at life this way.

Betsey, My Favorite Pumpkin and the Joy of Cooking

Did I introduce you to Betsey?  Yes…I did in a quick post the other day.  In case you missed it,  Betsey is my version of the cow head on the wall thing that people are doing.  I love it!  Have you seen it?  Miss Mustard Seed has one and has made it very popular.  I love her.  Don’t you?  Anyway…one day I was a a yard sale and I found Betsey.  She was lying there on the table….(Can one lay down if one is only a head?)….and it dawned “uponst” me….that I could have my own version of a cow head on the wall…for a smidge of the price.  Now…that is not to say…that I wouldn’t love to have a big one…but for now…Betsey will do just fine.  I am sad to say that I do not have a before picture, so get your imagination up and running.  She used to be white with golden, glowing eyes.  I believe that in her former life…she was a towel holder or something.  Now she is just beautiful….watching me cook.  (Btw:  That is my very own preserved Boxwood.  You can do it!) Betsey is a doll…in her espresso makeover. The other post about Betsey were pictures from my phone.  We will call this Betsey’s glamour shot.  😉

SONY DSC

So now onto my favorite pumpkin.  I’m just throwing this in because it’s almost fall. The pumpkin, I’m thinkin’, was marked down last year because it was getting close to Christmas.  I love it.  It’s my favorite fake pumpkin of all time.  Now the little bowl has a chip…so I got it at TJ Maxx (another fave!) for a song. (No…I didn’t sing and dance…but I would have…if they had asked.) It was a very thrifty price.

SONY DSC

Last but not least….the Joy of Cooking.  I found this little blue beauty at a yard sale the other day.  I was in love.  The color.  The popularity of this book.  The grease splatters from the woman that owned it for years.  The notes left inside.  The history of this cookbook.  All of it.  It was so worth the two dollars.  I believe that this one is a third edition.  There is something about old books that just grab me.

SONY DSC

I don’t want to let you go without mentioning what today is.  In my quiet time this morning, I thanked the Lord for keeping us safe since the dreadful day, twelve years ago.  I was expecting our second child and it was a  very scary and sad time.  My heart goes out to those…that will never recover from that dreadful day.  Not fully anyway.  There are so many that lost so much and I pray that today they are comforted by those that care and hold them up in prayer. I am also very thankful for those that have fought this battle.  I don’t ever want to take for granted those that serve to make this country what it is.

SONY DSC

May God continue to bless America,

Sigturquoise

p.s. Thank you to all that commented on my last post!  It was a joy to read what you had to say!  I LOVE your comments!

A Little Organization

Today…..I went through my baking cabinet.  You know, the one that holds all of the sprinkles and flavorings and seasonings.  It made me excited.  It made me dream about days of baking Christmas goodies and party food.

SONY DSC

Days that I clean out the cabinets and the pantry…and even the fridge….I feel very blessed.  I feel like I’m doing a good thing…just organizing what we already have.  I’m not at the store piling more and more in my cart…I’m just looking through what has already be given by the Provider.

s n p

This is such a simple post today.  No big project…which is not surprising.  Our life, while we have some of those now and then, is really about being inspired by what you have already been blessed with.

First...I have to rip everything out. (And throw out the stuff that is 76 years old.) ;)

I am thankful to be the type of person that gets joy out of these things.  Now that’s not to say that I don’t love to shop now and then.  I also love to go junking…which you already knew.  I just find contentment at times in telling myself “Nah…I don’t need more of that…I already have enough at home.”  I have to have a healthy balance or I start feeling overwhelmed.

This is me...in January.

On a little organizational note:  Have you tried storing your cornstarch, baking soda and baking powder in wide mouth canning jars?  It’s amazing.  Perfect for scooping.  Just be sure and label the tops.  😉

SONY DSC

What are your thoughts on hoarding collecting, Dirt Roaders?  Does too much overwhelm you?  Do you love having just enough?  I want to know.  I also want to do better myself.  Please pass the yard sale sign. 😉

Sorting through the piles,

Can you believe it?  It’s been a year already.  My first post was on my birthday, last year!  I thought that I was posting on the eve of my birthday…but it must have rolled on over to midnight.  My first post was short and sweet and you can find it here. It’s very short and sweet.

SONY DSC

I am so excited that you guys come with me on this journey.  I love sharing my faith…our food and our farmhouse with you.  It’s been amazing for me meeting up with different ones in our community…that ride along on this dirt road journey.  It humbles me…in a way that I can’t really explain.  Is it possible for God to do a work in you…when you are reaching out to others?  Of course it is.  That is the way that He works.  He is wonderful…and I love Him.

My first header for the blog.

My first header for the blog.

So…I have a little update for you.  Yesterday…was my big day.  On Saturday…the Mr. and our little guy spent several hours at the goat auction.  They had never been before…and they were so grateful to meet up with the Mr.’s brother and his wife.  They showed them the ropes and now I am a proud goat mama.  😉  I’m kinda thinking that the highlight of the auction…was getting to hang out with his brother…but the Mr. dutifully brought this crazy country girl…a little Pygmy and her baby.  I will post pictures as soon as I can.  Myrtle and Peanut…have now joined us at the Farmhouse.  They are precious.  Our kids are in love.  (That was kinda the plan.  Ask for goats for your birthday…for the kids to play with.)  😉  Annnnnd……..My Mr. and my FIL started on my beadboard backsplash…to be finished tonight!  Woot woot!  I’m so excited.  It definitely adds a huge touch of “farmhousey” around here.  I can’t wait to show you!

Birthday junk......is the best.

I also can’t wait to start this next year of blogging with you all.  I have some amazingly faithful blog followers that wait for my next post.  That is so fun.  Our last week was full of open houses and early morning hours of school starting and buying school supplies that we didn’t know that we needed…but maybe things will be more normal….for a bit.  Maybe I can get back on schedule.

I shall call her Dotty. ;)

I hope that you have a wonderful day, Dirt Roaders.  It’s looking bright and crisp in the sky here.  Hmmm…..do I see fall around the bend?  😉

SONY DSC

I blog…to share His love, and to encourage you to look around…at His blessings,

Sigturquoise

p.s. Mister Dirt Road….you are a blessing that I don’t deserve.  It humbles me to think that you were meant for me.  I will spend my life….cooking bacon for you…because I know…how much it means to you.  😉

Getting back in the routine of things…

Hey there.  Is your day going well?  I sure hope so.  We are trying to get back into the school groove around here.  It’s not too long until we will be in full swing.  Does summer go by faster the older you get?  When I was a kid…it lasted forever.  I don’t want to leave you there though…because routine is good.  It makes us appreciate the laid back times and gives us a reason to party during break.  😉

SONY DSC

The silver in my hair, (Lets call it silver…it sounds so much more sparkly than gray.) is testifying to the fact that my kids are growing up.  I told the Mr. yesterday…that someday it will be just he and I and the dogs here.  Ha!  He looked a little sad.  We both enjoy our kids…like crazy. We will probably be those grandparents.  lol!

SONY DSC

Last night was open house and the kids were excited.  When they are excited…then I am excited for them.  I do love my quiet time…and my “me” time….but in moderation on that last one.  My favorite time of day, during the school year, is when they climb into the vehicle to come back home.

SONY DSC

This post is starting to sound a little melancholy…and I don’t want you to be sad.  How bout this?  My kids are going back to school…and while they are gone…I’m going to do projects and cook fun things…and do laundry and go junking and go to the grocery store and PARTY HEARTY!!!  ha!  Whew…pulled us up out of that one…huh!?

SONY DSC

Have a wonderful day, Sweet Dirt Roaders!

Partying it up! 😉

Happy Weekend!

So tell me, Dirt Roaders.  Are you going to go junkin’ this weekend?  Junkin’ is fun.  It’s relaxing and it’s a thrifty hobby…most of the time.

This little jar was a junkin’ find.  If you follow me on Instagram (alongthedirtroad) you have already seen it.  It came from the thrift store.  It wasn’t as cheap as I would have liked…but I’m sure that it was way cheaper than I would have paid…if it had of been new.

SONY DSC

I will not be junking.  I have a wedding to attend and coordinate.  Wish me luck.  This is the first time that I have had this job in a wedding.  Actually…keep the luck…just say a prayer for me…please.  🙂

Maybe you are going to pull out your fall decor?  Is that jumping the gun?  Maybe.  My MIL and I were talking about this though…and we both love to decorate for fall.  It’s our favorite.  So…you know…it’s your house…do whatcha want.  I may wait a while…but…that doesn’t keep me from picking up a few things here and there.

SONY DSC

Whatever you do this weekend, I hope that you enjoy your home.  I hope that you find little things to do that make you feel cozy and thankful to God above for His provision in your life.  After all…we just borrow these things for a while.  Isn’t it fun though? That ol’ Proverbs 31 gal…she had it right…making things cozy for her family.  I believe that her bunch loved coming back home to her.  By the grace of God…I want it to be that way for mine.

Smiles!

A good man…

27 Saturday Jul 2013

A good man provides for his family.

A good man laughs with his family.

A good man makes his peace with God…to spend eternity with his family.

A good man encourages his family.

A good man encourages his friends.

A good man uses the talents that God gives him…to make life more beautiful for others.

We attended a service for my uncle today.  These are the things that I learned by listening about his life.  Of course…I already knew them, but they rang so true today.  God is good to bless us with men like this in our lives.

While the family was visiting after the service, across the road in the old part of the cemetery, a coyote trotted through.  It wasn’t even paying attention to us.  He had his sights set on something elsewhere.  How fitting.  We were there to pay our respects to my uncle…but he too, had his sights set elsewhere a few days ago.  It was time for him to go.  It was time for him to cash in on that heart that he gave to Jesus.  After all…a good man makes his peace with God…to spend eternity…not only with his family…but with his Lord.

Welcome to our stretch of the dirt road! It is filled with junkin' trips, culinary experiments and anything to "fluff the nest" which is our farmhouse. I love home decor that fits my family. I love a simplicity that we can live in. Maybe that is why the country life is so appealing to us. It's a place to breathe deep...and enjoy the journey. Join us! We would love to have you. (You might even see a chicken or two.)
