Beautiful are the feet…

12 Friday Apr 2013

I have a confession to make. Hi, my name is Kelli…and I get kind of weirded out by feet.  You too?  Oh!  I am so relieved.  I didn’t want to be the only one.  There is just one thing though, you see, I had these babies.  When they were born I was drawn to their tiny little feet.  These babies grew and I still love their feet.  Their feet have had many kisses bestowed upon them.  Their feet have had many pictures taken of them.  I will show you some…just because it’s Friday and feet and Friday both start with F.  No…I don’t get it either.  Just work with me.  😉

feet 1

feet 2

I also have this husband.  He has feet.  I know…big shocker.  This husband is going to say “Babe…why did you put a picture of my foot on your blog?”  His feet are extra special too.  Not only do they help him as he goes about his day to earn a living for his family…they are beautiful. Would you like for me to explain that?  Okay…here goes…”How beautiful are the feet of them that preach the gospel of peace, and bring glad tidings of good things.”  Romans 10:15  My husband is a minister.  He carries the gospel of peace to our Kid’s Church and to the elderly at the high-rise apartments.  There is something very beautiful about all of that.  Trust me…I am there beside him, to witness what God whispers in his heart…to share.

Guess what?  I have feet too! Shocked again?  I know, right!? One of my very favorite things about my own feet?  The pretty shoes that I can buy to put on them.  Ha!  Yes…I may not be a foot person, per say, but I have been a shoe lover from day one.  You too?  We have so much in common.  😉

SONY DSC

Have a wonderful day, Dirt Road Sweeties.  I hope that your weekend is full to the top with love and joy and peace and if you decide to get a pedicure this weekend…you can know, without a doubt….that I won’t be the one working in the salon.  😉

Lemon Button Love

11 Thursday Apr 2013

Hey Gang!  How is Thursday working out for you?  Hopefully….perfect.  Today…I just had to share something with you.  Yep.  You guessed it….my new Lemon Button fern.  She is so very pretty.  If you follow me on Instagram (alongthedirtroad) you can probably already tell that I’m in love with this little plant.  I just had to share it with you today.

SONY DSC

If you have read my blog much, you know that we have discussed the fact that for so very long I didn’t have real house plants.  Born in the late seventies…when terrariums where making a splash and house plants were all the rage, by the time I got married and had my own home…that seemed so old school.  I mean, come on.  Ha!

SONY DSC

Then I started to get older and more wise (hopefully) and turned into my mother.  (Okay, I just admitted that on the world-wide web.)  I found out that having living green things around  is actually a method of relaxation. For several years now, I have had happy little plants in our home. I enjoy watering them and watching them grow.

SONY DSC

Who knew?  Mom knew.  Moms are smart that way. Thanks Mom.

So are you wondering how I came upon Lovely Lady Lemon Button?  (Just kidding, I don’t name them.) Well okay then. Friday night, my daughter and I had to run into town for a bit.  While I was there I got a call from a certain husband.  He told me in a sad little voice that he forgot to pick up turkey tags for both he and our son.  They needed them before sunup the next morning.

SONY DSC

Enter:  Lemon Button Fern

When we walked through the front doors of Wal-Mart, there she sat in all of her green glory.  She begged to come home with us.  My daughter couldn’t hear her little voice…but I could.  “Please Ma’am…you look like good folks. Can I please come home with you.  I don’t drink much and I am really quiet.”  What?  Your purchases don’t talk to you?  Okay…mine don’t either…but I was really excited.  She was only five American dollahs.  😉  That makes it all good.

SONY DSC

So there you have it Dirt Roaders.  The tale of my lemon button love.  Ain’t she a beaut?  I think so too.  Have a wonderful rest of the……my favorite day of the week.

p.s. Mr. Husband…..I will do errands for you…anytime…for a small fee.  HA!

Simplified Spring

10 Wednesday Apr 2013

Hey Friends.  I hope that all is well today.  Today I thought that we might chat about some simple things to “springify” your home.  You know…small, subtle touches.  I love all of the beautiful things that I see in Blogville…but sometimes I get so much joy out of just reworking what I already have. Sometimes I pick up something little to add to what is already waiting in our storage area.   Okay then, here we go.

SONY DSC

I love this little basket-type tray that I picked up. I think that I got it at Marshalls.  I did use other things that I already had to fill it though.  I thought that it brightened up our coffee table.

SONY DSC

I found this old basket at the thrift store a while back.  These poor lemons have really gotten a work-out.  I still love them though.  They add so much cheer.  They have been in several different places in our home.

SONY DSC

This white picnic basket was another thrift store find a long time ago.  One day I decided to introduce it to the blue and green craze…with a stack of books.  Just a pop of color on a white basket…but it spreads a little cheer.

SONY DSC

More lemons?  Yes…but this is the last time…today.  I picked this glass piece up at the thrift store one day.( It’s one of my favorite treasures.) I was so excited…it still had the little Tag sticker on the bottom.  It’s on our mantle with faux lemons and boxwood.  So bright and happy.

Bringing spring into your home isn’t hard to do. (Of course, you already knew that.)  In a society that always tells us that we need more…sometimes it’s nice to say…”No thank you…I already have enough.”

Have a wonderful day, Dirt Roaders!

mmmMonday! Grilling up a Quesadilla

08 Monday Apr 2013

Posted by Kelli in Yum for the Tum

Do you ever just get inspired by a photo and then jump in the kitchen and make something?  That is kind of how this recipe came about.  I was looking through my new BHG and spotted a recipe for grilled quesadillas.  I’m not really sure how they made them but this is what I came up with and it is a keeper.  Oh and by the way…welcome to mmmMonday!

SONY DSC

Ingredients:

1 bag of boneless, skinless chicken tenderloins

flour tortillas

yellow and red peppers

onion

salt and pepper

brown rice

pepper jack cheese

sour cream

1 lime

cilantro

butter

SONY DSC

I didn’t give exact amounts on all of this…because I think that each person can just adjust to what they need.  If you are only making quesadillas for two you won’t need much brown rice…but I was cooking for a family of five.  You guys are smart…you can just eyeball it.  😉

Directions:

I began by cooking the chicken in an iron skillet.  (My cowboy cookware.)  After the chicken started cooking a bit…I then added the red and yellow pepper.  You could use green if you want.  I just had these on hand.  Then I diced an onion and threw it in there.  While that was going, we cooked the amount of rice that we thought that we  would need to spread a layer on our quesadillas.  Then we  grated our pepper jack cheese.  We used 8 oz.   After the chicken mixture was finished (Don’t forget to season with s & p.) and the rice was done…it was time to assemble and grill.  I preheated my grill pan…maybe on medium/high heat.  I  rubbed the pan with a little olive oil and butter.  On one half of the tortilla I  layered rice, chicken mixture and cheese.  Then I folded the tortilla over and placed it in the grill pan.  While it’s grilling you can brush it with butter to soften it a little. After a minute or two, with tongs, flip it over and grill until the cheese inside starts to melt.  (If you don’t have a grill pan…and iron skillet or just a regular skillet will work too…just like a grilled cheese.)

SONY DSC

After my grilled quesadillas were done, I mixed some light sour cream with the juice of one lime and some diced cilantro.  Oh my goodness.  I love that.  You can eyeball that mixture too…and adjust to your own taste.  I probably used about a half cup of sour cream, one lime and a handful of cilantro.

SONY DSC

There you have it, Dirt Road Foodies.  My recipes are very casual…with room for invention.  This was quick and easy and delicious.  It’s not rocket science but it puts a good, healthy, meal on the table.  Next week we will be sharing the joys of the Mother/Daughter Meatloaf.  The girls and I whipped up a mean meatloaf together and it was so much fun.  I can’t wait to share it with you.  (They helped with the quesadillas too…my son-in-laws will love me someday.)  😉

SONY DSC

Let me know if you think that you might try this or if you have a recipe that you would like to see on here….or if you just like to talk food…like me.  I love your comments.  They make me smile.  (I just realized that I say “eyeball” a lot when I’m cooking. Is that normal?)

Have a great day!

Brass is Back?

It’s true.  You heard it here…(probably not) first.  I have been seeing it here and there.  Brass is back.  You might be saying…”Hey Kel, it never left.   I’ve had it all this time.”  Okie dokie.  I respect that.  The thing is…I think the only place that I had any left was the builder’s pack lighting that we haven’t replaced yet.

Well…I fixed that the other day at the thrift store.  (Might as well talk a little more about junkin’.) For fifty little cents, I picked up a tarnished piece of brass…and brought her home with me.  She has the cutest little feet that you ever did see. I just  love her smudgy exterior.  She fits right in with the other well-loved things at our house.

SONY DSC

I know…I know…we’re not all on the same page with the faux greenery…but I just love these little boxwood topiary balls. (They are great for a momma….on a budget.)

She is my only photo today.  Sorry that she’s a little fuzzy. (Note to self…wear you glasses during edits.) 😉  I just wanted to let you know, Dirt Roaders, that if you have been true to brass all along…and you love it…now is your time to shine.  They are claiming that it warms a room.  I’m down with that.  It may take a while to grow on me again…but for now…I’m going to enjoy the cute little feet on my brass pot.

Wishing you a wonderful weekend…from our dirt road to yours.

Let’s go Junkin’! Part 2

Hey sweet friends.  You are back for more?  Okay…I can deliver.  The funny thing is…I’m getting myself pumped to get out there and junk too.  My grandparents are huge auction goers and a  good auction sounds fun…if it would warm up a tad here.  I think that we have chances for sleet.  I think that I’m gonna “cry real loud.”  (My cousin used to threaten her family with that when she was little.)  I don’t think that it will help though.

Okay…so junkin’.  That’s why you are here…right?  Either that or you just love me.  I hope both.  That would make me very happy.  People that love me…..that love junk.  Wowza.

This is one of my favorites. This old lamp cost me five bucks. I love everything about it.

.....and here is the top. ;)

…..and here is the top. 😉

...and she looks great with a topiary ball hanging from her neck. ;)

…and she looks great with a topiary ball hanging from her neck. 😉

So what about when you are at a yard sale and you spot something at the same time as someone else?  Do you wrestle them to the ground and twist it out of their grasp?  Or how about the person that just won’t give up at the auction and must have more money than you?  It makes one think that junkin’ should be a sport.

Do you remember this? My husband bought it for me at an auction...(good eye Mr....good eye) and I talked him into cutting the legs off...coffee table height...and can you say love? :)

What about when something seems too high?  Do you ask them to take less?  I have been known to use my bargaining skills a time or two.  I got an awesome pair of Le Creuset canisters (cobalt) for a steal one day.  I knew what they were…and he knew what they were…but he needed to get rid of them.  Cha-ching!

Do you remember this cloche? I found it down on the bottom shelf at the thrift store for four dollars. That was a heart thumper...right there. ;)

I’m sure, Dirt Roaders, that you use common sense and courtesy when you are out junkin’.  In my opinion…I don’t need a piece of junk bad enough to ruin my reputation or to make an enemy for life.  I would love to hear about your escapades though.  I absolutely LOVE…lovity…love your comments.  I want to hear about your bargains and your bargaining.

You've seen this bowl lots of times...but it's one of my treasures. I love it's chippy personality. It was my mother-in-law's but she gave it to me. How precious. ;)

Let’s go Junkin’! Part 1

There you are. How are you today?  I hope that all is well.  I hope that spring is springing for you.  I’m so glad that you could come along on our little junkin’ tour today.  It’s one of my very favorite things to do. I will give you a few little junkin’ tid bits in between photos.  Yeah…I’m thoughtful like that.  😉

SONY DSC

I found this little beauty at a flea market type store while we were on vacation once. I’m sure that I didn’t pay much for it. It was missing it’s handle…but I love the colors and the vintage look.

Are you crazy about bargains and sales?  My mom and mother-in-law both are. When I  want a fun-filled day that will leave me exhausted… I go junkin’ with those two.  It’s crazy fun.

This little step stool will always be one of my favorites. I love the worn gingham pattern on it. I think that I have two dollars for it.

Usually in the winter, folks around here close up shop on the yard sales.  That is the time that we use to hit the thrift stores.  We have a few around here and sometimes you come upon a wonderful bargain.

This little green juice and water jar was given to me by a friend at Christmas. I love it. The white piece of ceramic behind...was free at an antique mall booth. It has a crack in it...but well loved things are welcome in our home.

One of the main things that I love about going junkin’ is the fact that you find fun things to incorporate into your home décor that are unique.  Plus the perk…that sometimes you come upon an antique that is cheaper than dirt.  (Okay…not that cheap.)

I was needing a new lamp and I already had the burlap shade. I found this nickel lamp at our thrift store for four American dollahs! Yay!

I hope that you join us next week for part two of our little junkin’ tour.  I just thought that with it warming up that a few of my little treasures might inspire you.

This little iron stand is one of my favorites. I love it's chippyness and the fact that it can be used for so many things. I think that I gave a dollar or two for it.

Aren't these amazing? I found the jars at the ReStore (four of them) and the Ironstone at the thrift store. (Do you guys follow For the Love of a House? When I saw her jars...I was in love with this idea.)

Do you guys follow For the Love of a House blog?  It’s wonderful.  I love her style. She has a set of the jars above and I have always been in love with that idea since.  I had a big one and one in this size,  but when I saw a bunch of them at the ReStore…I was so excited.  I got a bargain!

Have a wonderful day, Dirt Roaders.  May your junk be cheap….and your pockets be deep.  (Insert eye roll here….if you need to.)  😉

mmmMonday! Squash in a whole new (healthy) light…

01 Monday Apr 2013

Posted by Kelli in Yum for the Tum

Hey Sweets!  How was your Easter?  Was it wonderful?  I hope so.  I hope that it was filled with all things wonderful….just like ours.  So here we are…back to mmmMonday! Are you guys full of ham?  Did you know that up until a few years ago I didn’t realize that people always had ham for Easter?  WHERE ON EARTH WAS I?  I am a foodie kind of gal and this slipped by me.  Probably because my family didn’t do ham for Easter…maybe.  I don’t know….but NOW I know.  😉

So….it’s mmmMonday! and I have a little squash tip for you. You know…it’s spring….squash is yellow…see the connection?  Okay…moving on. Ha!  Where I’m from, squash is grown to be fried.  Some of our mommas rolled it in flour then dipped it in milk and egg.  Other mommas used cornmeal.  Any way you fry it…it’s a warm bit of heaven on your tongue.  Fried squash is comfort food…no doubt about it.

Saying all of that…today I’m going to give you a new little take on squash.  We usually have an abundance of it in the summer…as long as the squash bugs are kept at bay.  Even when we don’t have it on the vine…you can usually pick it up at the grocery store year around.  Yellow squash is my favorite.  There are other names for it…but generally we just call it yellow. Last year I was trying to come up with some different ways to fix it.  Enter:  The Panini grill press pan.

Do you guys have a Panini pan or some sort of grill pan?  That is all you need.  That and a little olive oil and salt and pepper.  Squash is wonderful this way.  It gives it an amazing flavor…and that is coming from a girl (Doesn’t that sound young? Yes..it does.) that was raised on fried squash.

SONY DSC

GRILLED SQUASH

(I only use the bottom of my grill pan….of course.)  😉

yellow squash (or whatever kind you love)

olive oil

salt and pepper

Directions:

Go ahead and get your gill pan warming on the stove.  Maybe a mediumish heat.  You don’t want it too hot…but you do want a nice little sizzle.  Cut your squash length-wise.  Brush them with olive oil and add a little salt and pepper. Lay them on your grill pan and cook for a few minutes until they are starting to get a little translucent and then turn. Cook on this side until they are cooked through. You might need to add a little more S&P to taste.

There ya go, Dirt Roaders.  A healthy easy side just for you.  We want you to be around for years to come.  We want you to grow up big and strong.  😉  I’m being good today.  There is a bowl full of air-popped popcorn beside me…..dressed in a tad of real butter and a drizzle of olive oil.  Of course a little sea salt too. Let’s be healthy and live to be old and crusty.  Now…go forth…and grill that squash!
