Simplified Spring

Hey Friends.  I hope that all is well today.  Today I thought that we might chat about some simple things to “springify” your home.  You know…small, subtle touches.  I love all of the beautiful things that I see in Blogville…but sometimes I get so much joy out of just reworking what I already have. Sometimes I pick up something little to add to what is already waiting in our storage area.   Okay then, here we go.

SONY DSC

I love this little basket-type tray that I picked up. I think that I got it at Marshalls.  I did use other things that I already had to fill it though.  I thought that it brightened up our coffee table.

SONY DSC

I found this old basket at the thrift store a while back.  These poor lemons have really gotten a work-out.  I still love them though.  They add so much cheer.  They have been in several different places in our home.

SONY DSC

This white picnic basket was another thrift store find a long time ago.  One day I decided to introduce it to the blue and green craze…with a stack of books.  Just a pop of color on a white basket…but it spreads a little cheer.

SONY DSC

More lemons?  Yes…but this is the last time…today.  I picked this glass piece up at the thrift store one day.( It’s one of my favorite treasures.) I was so excited…it still had the little Tag sticker on the bottom.  It’s on our mantle with faux lemons and boxwood.  So bright and happy.

Bringing spring into your home isn’t hard to do. (Of course, you already knew that.)  In a society that always tells us that we need more…sometimes it’s nice to say…”No thank you…I already have enough.”

Have a wonderful day, Dirt Roaders!

How do you feel when you find a treasure?

Are you ever toodling around in a store and not finding much…and then all of the sudden….bright heavenly light surrounds an item on the shelf?  You too?  Whew…I thought that I was hallucinating. 😉  Okay, so maybe that doesn’t really happen…but I do feel just a bit of the ol’ giddies jumping around in my tum.

This usually happens every time I’m in TJ Maxx.  Don’t they have just a wonderful conglomeration of stuff?  I usually NEVER leave without checking out the clearance section in the home goods department.

SONY DSC

I am pretty sure that on my last trip, this pillow was my only purchase.  My daughter and I were strolling along and there it was, in all of its blue and cream patterny- goodness…waiting for me.

SONY DSC

I had been wanting a new pillow for the little farmhousey bench by the front door.  This little pillow was exactly what I needed.  I said “Hey there, wanna come home with us?”  It was all like…”I thought that you would never ask.  You look like decent people.”  Okay, that didn’t happen.  I can guarantee though…that I had that little giddy feeling going on.  SCORE!

SONY DSC

Don’t tell the folks at TJ Maxx this…but I think that one of the reasons that I love to go…is that it’s kind of  like a junkin’ trip in there.  I never really know what I’m going to find.  Usually what I do find…doesn’t cost much.  I love that. A treasure hunt.

SONY DSC

Have a wonderful day, Dirt Roadikins. We all know that these are not the real treasures in life. Not by far.  They are just fun little things…for now.   May your day be filled with giddy wonderfulness.  May all of your pillows have a heavenly glow! I would love to hear about your treasure hunts.  Leave me a comment and we will chat.  😉

Puff and Fluff and Hope

Sometimes in life, after a long, cold winter a tiny bit of hope is born.  It looks so fragile.  It looks so tender and tiny.  It’s really not.  Hope has an amazing will to live.  The Creator of all has placed something very determined….in hope.

SONY DSC

If you are barely hanging on…I want to encourage you.  The tiniest flicker of hope can kindle a huge flame.  If you can scratch up… just a bit…down inside your heart, it will grow and grow.

SONY DSC

Hope is a gift.  Do you feel it….when you hold a newborn or when you see your flowers poking their sweet little heads up out of the cold earth? Or how about when you get an amazing DIY idea to snazz up your home a tad?   Do you feel it then also?  I thought so.

SONY DSC

SONY DSC

Sometimes in Blogland…it seems like everyone is doing just fine.  Hopefully…(There’s that word again.) it’s true.  Just in case it’s not…I want you to know that there is always…always hope.  There is always more to come.  There is a Creator that does amazing things…and I will tell you like I tell my kids…He thinks that you are amazing.

SONY DSC

I hope that you have a wonderful day, Dirt Roaders.  I hope that you are filled with hope from the tippy top of your sweet heads….down to the soles of your feet.  You deserve it…..you are an amazing creation.

Sigturquoise

p.s.  To my MIL:  You are doing a wonderful job taking care of Papaw.  Thank you for always hanging onto hope.  It encourages the whole family to watch you live your life that way.  You are a good woman.  🙂 I love you.

Does the big W. ever surprise you?

Hey friends.  How are you?  I know…I know…I usually don’t post on the weekend.  I happened to take one of those old lady naps in the evening…and now I am having trouble sleeping.  Plus…I happened upon some amazingly cool stuff at Wal-Mart today…and I couldn’t wait to share it with you.  Does the big W. ever surprise you like that?  You know, not just your basics, but some pretty nifty stuff!

SONY DSC

The whole reason that we even went to Wal-Mart was to get a new welcome mat.  My Mr. has been painting our exterior doors and we wanted a new mat for the front.  I am totally in love with the color that we have chosen for our doors.  It’s called Slate Tile.  I love the depth that it adds.  Anyway…..we decided to park back by the automotive entrance…and head to the rugs.  Two perks in this.  One…you usually don’t meet up with tons of people who you know…just in case you didn’t dress like you were going to an inaugural ball and two…you get to go right past the CRAFT department.  Yes…I can hear your *sigh*!  😉

SONY DSC

So…I picked up a lone cart that was left back there, (Hey…at least I didn’t jump on the motorized one.) and zipped right down a craft aisle.  What to my wondering eyes did appear….but a little shelf full of wondermous things!  Rolls of burlap ribbon and cute little grapevine wreaths.  They even had a little chicken wire basket.  What chicken farmer’s wife could turn that down?

SONY DSC

I figured it up on the way home and my little shopping spree cost us about thirteen dollars.  (As far as my sashay through the craft department goes.)  How fun is that?  I actually had two rolls of burlap ribbon…but I could live without the original color.  The apple green had to come home with me.

SONY DSC

and……

SONY DSC

Thanks for coming along on our Wal-Mart trip, Dirt Roaders.  Sometimes the big W. surprises me.  What a fun little trip!  By the way…I was sweet and let the Mr. pick out the rug.  He did great.  I love it when we do this.  It may or may not be exactly what I would have picked…but I love it even more…because he picked it.  He is my sweetheart. 😉

Nests warm this momma’s heart…

Aren’t nests wonderful?  A tiny little home for raising young.  Sometimes perched on a branch…sometimes crafted in the wreath on our front door. (There was some craziness with that…when Momma Bird flew in the door a time or two.)  There is just something about sweet little nests that warm this momma’s heart.

SONY DSC

My husband teases me at night about getting all snuggled up in my “nest.”  Hey…when you have a really great mattress…you look forward to time spent in your nest.  I don’t notice him complaining.  I do notice him snoring. “Babe…turn over on your side…you are snoring!”

SONY DSC

When our babies are on break from school I am known to say that I have all of my babies in the nest.  I LOVE SUMMER VACATION!  I just had to yell that at you.  I love babies chirping around here all day long.  I enjoyed the Mr. and I having a full nest during Spring Break too.

SONY DSC

You know…I just thought…my maiden name is Finch.  Maybe…that is what this is all about.  Okay…so I’m cracking myself up with that one.

SONY DSC

While we were on Spring Break…I asked my little daughter to cut some burlap strips for me.  She did a wonderful job…and I have had this little burlap nest idea bubbling for a while.  That’s about all that there is to it.  Cut the strips…form a little nest.  I added a tad of moss to the bottom and then some pretty faux eggs.

SONY DSC

I’m going to enjoy my nest, Dirt Roaders. It warms the “momma’s heart” in me.  Far too soon…the babies fly away and make their own.  Thank You Father…for the wisdom to enjoy them now…while keeping our eyes directed toward the future. I love You!

Spices, straighten up!

15 Friday Feb 2013

Hey all!  Was your Valentine’s Day wonderful?  Was it awful?  Don’t answer that.  Let’s move on.  😉

As we all know…we are supposed to get bitten by the organization bug on January 1st of every year.  Does that happen to you?  It happens to me.  I even had this little list going this year. ( I usually use the cold winter months for these kinds of things.  In the summer…the garden takes up my organizing time.)    It’s kind of a pain until I’m done…but when I’m finished it’s oh so nice.  Thus, Spices, straighten up!

Does your spice cabinet/drawer/shelf/whatever drive you insane at times?  Ours was getting out of hand. It seemed like every time I needed a certain herb or spice I had to take everything out, find the spice, and then put it  back in. Sometimes…stuff would even fall out on me.  That made me feel a bit grumpyfied. I knew that I needed to clean it up…but then I had a brainstorm!

First...I have to rip everything out. (And throw out the stuff that is 76 years old.) ;)

First…I have to rip everything out. (And throw out the stuff that is 76 years old.) 😉

I thought that maybe if I went down and shopped the basement I could find a little rack or shelf to help my spices straighten up.  Imagine my delight when I came upon something that didn’t sell at one of my yard sales!  Glory be!  It was our baby food carousel!  It still had the one dollar sticker with my initials on it.  Could it be?  Could I keep this wonderful thing that held my children’s nourishment and use it for another purpose?

SONY DSC

It was a little dusty.  Not too bad though.  I was soooo excited.  You see, I am very a tad sentimental when it comes to my kid’s baby stuff.  Any excuse to use it….I’m there.  🙂  You know…the outcome wasn’t bad at all.  It doesn’t move exactly as free as I would like, but it does give a wonderful sense of organization to the cabinet. I moved my most used things to the front. I can see almost everything now and I love…lovity…love that!

Neatness just really does it for me. I could have a slight problem. ;)

Neatness just really does it for me. I could have a slight problem. 😉

Do you have any wonderful organization tips to share?  I would love to hear them. Don’t be shy…help a gal out!  😉

I'm pretty pleased with the results.

I’m pretty pleased with the results.

Have a wonderful weekend, Dirt Roaders.  Go forth and tell those spices to straighten up!

Smell-o-rama!

02 Saturday Feb 2013

Happy Saturday to you!  I hope that you are doing things that you love.  We are.  We are enjoying our home.  The smell of bacon is permeating the air.  (The Mr. is an addict.) That really fits with our subject matter today.  What a wonderful day for Smell-o-rama!

You know….I realized the other day that I have not shared something very important with you:

SMELL!  You know…in Blogland…we share all kinds of things that we can SEE but we cannot let your smell our homes.  That would just be weird.

SONY DSC

Sweet little warmer for the bathroom.

Smell..is a very important part of my life.  I know…I know.  You are saying to yourself…”Well…join the club Kel.  Isn’t it a big part of life for us all?” Granted, you are right, but I come from a family of people with…um…”healthy” sized noses.  I don’t know if that is why we have such sensitive sniffers or not but we can smell a “stank” or something good, seemingly miles away.

SONY DSC

My favorite plug-in warmer. It hangs out in the laundry room.

I love to smell of my family.  I know this sounds weird…but it’s true. I love to snuggle my kids close and bury my face in their hair and smell them.  I love to hug my husband and breathe in the scent of his laundered shirt and his cologne.  When you hug my dad…you smell like his cologne when you walk away.  My mom can wear musk in a way like no other.  It smells go good on her.

SONY DSC

This one is the Celtic Love Knot from Scentsy.

How about when you are cooking?  I can tell more by sniffing than by tasting.  Do you agree?  These noses…they are amazing little tools in the kitchen.  😉

So my big question for you today is this:  What is your favorite scent for your home?

Our girls have a pretty one.

Our girls have a pretty one.

We have several warmers around our house for Scentsy.  I LOVE scentsy.  I like the scents in our home to reflect the seasons but I also like for it to just smell good and like “home.”

This one is from Wal-Mart. They have pretty ones too.

This one is from Wal-Mart. They have pretty ones too.

I am a fan of light smells.   I like citrus…in a major way.  I like summery citrus smells and fall citrus smells and Christmas citrus smells.  I have good memories of peach too.  My friend’s mom always kept peach flavored potpourri in their home.  (Late 80’s ) and it smelled so good.  Scentsy makes a good pomegranate too.  I like it because it doesn’t smell seasonal to me.  It just smells amazing.  (Did I mention that we have a Scentsy dealer in our church? YAY!)

Aren't you a pretty little thing?!

Aren’t you a pretty little thing?!

I would love to hear all about your favs!  Your comments make me smile.  Don’t be shy, Dirt Roaders.  Let’s visit! Smell-o-rama…is my “thang.”  😉

Get in gear Valentine!

My. Word.  Everyone in Blogland is gearing up for Valentine’s Day…except me.  I have no good excuse.  Not really.  I mean, I usually don’t put up tons of Valentine’s Day decor…but come on Kel….this is Blogland we are talking about.  That being said…Get in gear Valentine…is directed at yours truly.  The project that you are about to see is for your viewing pleasure…just because I care.  (Plus…I thought that my family would think that it was pretty cool.  😉 )

I've had this little mailbox for quite a while. It came in handy for this little project.

I found this vintage valentine in an antique dresser that we bought.

A little birdie told me…

What did a little birdie tell me?

A little birdie told me that it didn’t want to be put away with the Christmas decor.  I agree.  I think that he looks stunning on the mantle wreath.

SONY DSC

I’m not really sure why I decided to leave the birds out this year.  Maybe because they are white…and I love white.  When we first built our home I was afraid that I had too much.  Nah.  We’re good. Keep it coming.

SONY DSC

The other day I was visiting over at Thistlewood Farm.  Karianne is delightful. You guys would love her.  Anyway, she was making the most precious little birds.  So bright and cheery.  Bright and cheery is good in the winter.

I hope that you have a wonderful day and an amazing weekend, Dirt Roaders.  Now…go forth and………enjoy.

p.s.  Today is my 100th post!  I know…I know…such a baby blogger.  😉  Thank you, to all of you that are riding with me….along the dirt road.
